Is It Safe To Give A Guy With HPV Oral Sex?

Dear Heather,

Please help. I really need to know if it’s safe to give a guy with HPV oral sex! I don’t want to look it up online because there might be pictures or something and I don’t want anyone to see me doing that. Help! I want to pleasure my boyfriend, but not at the risk of my own help.

Before I answer this question, I just want to quickly say that it’s great that you’re thinking about this issue. A lot of people assume that you can’t contract anything through oral sex, so protection of any kind isn’t necessary. I’m glad you’re being cautious!

With that being said, here’s the deal: yes, you can get HPV through oral sex. If your boyfriend has HPV and you give him oral sex without protection, it’s possible that you can also get HPV. Unfortunately, researchers and doctors do not know the specifics about HPV and oral sex just yet, so there are a lot of unanswered questions. They know that you can contract HPV through oral sex, but they don’t know all the facts about what happens to you if that happens, or if it’s spread more easily that way or not.

I get that that sounds confusing, and I wish I had a better answer for you. But for now, just assume that any kind of sexual contact with your boyfriend may result in you contracting HPV. What can you do to prevent that? Always use protection. Although condoms are not 100 percent effective in preventing the spread of HPV (even with a condom on, it can still be spread by the uncovered skin), they are still your best bet. If you choose to be sexually active with your BF, use a condom during intercourse every time. And if you want to try oral sex, try it using a condom. That may sound a little odd, but it’s safe and it’s your best option.

If you’re the right age, you can always consider getting the HPV vaccine. It is recommended for girls ages 13 to 17, and right now, it’s everyone’s best bet in preventing the spread of HPV (besides abstinence, of course). This is something you should discuss with your parents, although ultimately, it is your body and your decision.

So, to sum it all up, the best advice I can give you is to always use condoms and consider getting the HPV vaccine. Your only other option? Don’t have sex of any kind. Good luck and be safe!

take care,
Heather
