Today is World Goth Day! Yes, today the world is celebrating the loveliness of all things goth and all of those who wish to partake in its wonders. I’ve never identified as a goth, but I’ve always had some love for the aesthetic and I love ’80s goth rock like The Cure so…that must count for something? But I’ve always loved goth characters in TV shows and movies, especially the girls like Lydia from Beetlejuice or Wednesday Addams from The Addams Family. They were just always so comfortable in their own skin, very take it or leave it, this is me. There’s something really empowering about seeing that, especially as a kid.
To celebrate, here’s a roundup 15 of the best goth girls in movies and TV. Of course, whether some of them are really goth or not will always be debatable, but one thing is certain: They definitely embrace a little darkness in their lives.
Lydia From BeetlejuiceLydia got to hang around with a dead dude so she was basically living the dream. Also, can we talk about this red dress? It's five levels of amazing.Photo Source: Beetlejuice/Warner Bros.
Morticia And Wednesday From The Addams FamilyMorticia and Wednesday are serious style inspirations. If you haven't watched the original Addams family series from the '60s or The Addams Family Values then you are missing out on some serious gothy gold.Photo Source: Addams Family Values/Paramount Pictures
Joan of Arc From Clone HighIn Clone High, Joan is the cloned, teen version of Joan of Arc. If you're the clone of a woman who was burned alive for a ridiculous reason you'd be pretty nihilistic and cynical too, wouldn't you?Photo Source: Clone High/MTV
Henrietta From South ParkThe best foul mouthed, elementary school goth around. Seriously though, she's a riot. It's worth watching South Park just for her and the other goth kids.Photo Source: South Park/Comedy Central
Abby From NCISShe's probably the perkiest goth of the lot. Sure, she has her fiesty moments but who doesn't? Definitely the baddest forensic scientist around to rock pigtails.Photo Source: NCIS/CBS
Triana From Venture Bros.Triana is definitely a true blue (black?) goth and it's sad that she doesn't get as much love as she should.Photo Source: Venture Bros/Adult Swim
Sam From Danny PhantomSam was definitely a proud goth, but she definitely had a bit of a hippie streak in her, too. Also, she makes wearing purple lipstick look so easy. Show me your ways, please.Photo Source: Danny Phantom/Nickelodeon
Tina From GleeHer goth levels were definitely toned down after a while, but we can still reminisce about the good ol' full on gothy days with our girl Tina, right?Photo Source: Glee/Fox
Raven From Teen TitansCoolest character on the show or coolest character on the show? Going to go with coolest character on the show.Photo Source: Teen Titans/Cartoon Network
Andrea From DariaAndrea had, like, five lines for the entire duration of Daria's run, but she still had a pretty noticeable presence for a minor character.Photo Source: Daria/MTV
Those Goth Dogs From A Goofy MovieThey were in this movie for about two seconds if I remember correctly. And yet their distaste towards peppy school activities still resonated.Photo Source: A Goofy Movie/Disney
Ellie From DegrassiEllie fit just about all of the goth stereotypes perfectly and she was proud of it. Nobody could rock a mesh top better than her.Photo Source: Degrassi/Teen Nick
Ashley From DegrassiAnd then Ashley was goth for about two seconds. That was cute.Photo Source: Degrassi/Teen Nick
Gwen From Total Drama IslandProbably one of the most chill, easy going goths on the list. She wasn't much of a downer like her fellow goths on this list and was actually a super likable character. Still didn't prevent her from being called the "weird goth girl" though. Ah well, she rocked her goth identity like a champ nevertheless.Photo Source: Total Drama Island/Cartoon Network
The Ladies Of The CraftGoths and also witches with a vindictive flare. Goals, to be honest.Photo Source: The Craft/Columbia Pictures
