To be honest, 2004 doesn’t really seem like it happened that long ago. So the fact that today is the 10 year anniversary of one of the best movies of all time blows my mind. I’m obviously talking about Mean Girls, the film that spawned tons of perfect quotes, hundreds of hilarious memes, and even a holiday (October 3rd, duh). Mean Girls is one of those movies you can just watch over and over again, without getting sick of it. It’s basically perfection.
But the release of Mean Girls isn’t the only notable pop culture event that happened in 2004. It was a pretty big year for celebrities, TV shows, movies, and even social media. It may feel like some of this stuff happened only last year, but no… we’re all just old, I guess. Here are 15 things you won’t believe happened 10 years ago. Enjoy this little trip down memory lane!
1. Mean Girls was released
One of the movies that defines our generation. No exaggeration. You already know what I’m watching tonight.
2. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen turned 18
…Prompting every gross perv out there to start a countdown until their birthday, as if the day they turned 18 they were going to release a bunch of naked pictures. Gross.
3. Destiny’s Child released their fourth and final album, Destiny Fulfilled
Yeah, that mini “reunion” this past year? Definitely not enough. We want more Destiny’s Child!!
4. Janet Jackson had her “wardrobe malfunction” at the Super Bowl
Skip to 4:04 if you want to see this “wardrobe malfunction” that really changed the way live shows are now censored.
5. Facebook was launched
Have I REALLY been Facebook stalking for 10 years?!? Really??
6. Friends ended
…Spawning way too many future TV shows to announce that they were the next Friends. No, you’re not. And you never will be. Now excuse me while I go cry in the corner because there will never be a new episode of this show again.
7. Britney Spears got married… twice
Who can forget about that time Brit casually got married in Vegas to a childhood friend? And then got married to Kevin Federline in the same year? It would be amusing if 2004 weren’t the start of Britney’s downward spiral 🙁 At least she made a comeback, though!
8. Ashlee Simpson was caught lip-syncing on Saturday Night Live
Do yourselves a favor and watch this video of Ashlee Simpson fumbling around on stage after getting caught lip-syncing. She literally has no idea to react and it’s hilarious. This was a cringe-worthy moment that had everyone talking… and definitely the biggest thing she’s known for.
9. Napoleon Dynamite was released
Who knew a movie about basically absolutely nothing would be so popular? But it was. 2004 was the year everyone not only quoted everything from Napoleon Dynamite, but also tried to learn that dance he did at the end of the movie. I’m embarrassed for us, guys.
10. Lindsay Lohan released her debut album, Speak
In 2004, Lindsay was really on top of the world. She had just blossomed from a child star to a gorgeous, older actress. She had shocked everyone with her amazing role in Mean Girls. She released her first album and a bunch of music videos. She even hosted the MTV Movie Awards! Looking at her now, it’s actually pretty depressing.
11. Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azakaban dominated the box office
And now I REALLY want to have a Harry Potter movie marathon.
12. Jennifer Hudson placed 7th on American Idol
I constantly forget that Jennifer Hudson was even on American Idol! Who knew the girl who placed 7th would go on to be one of the most popular people from the show?
13. Sex and The City ended
And we all stopped hearing Carrie’s wise quotes every week. Sigh. If only Sex and The City stopped at the series finale. Then everything would be fine! But no – they just had to make not one, but TWO terrible movies. Ugh.
14. Spider-Man 2 with Tobey Maguire was released
Which is notable because Spider-Man 2 with Andrew Garfield is being released this year. Coincidence?
15. Amy Poehler made her debut on Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live with Tina Fey
And they made history as the first, and only, two female anchors. Yay!
Which of these things was the biggest event to you? Which did you not care about? What did I forget about that happened in 2004? Tell me in the comments!
