I hope you’re enjoying the spring weather and daydreaming about summer vacation. Spring is just flying by so I hate to break it to you, but final exams are coming. There are still a few weeks left, but honestly, it’s never too early to start studying for your finals. The more prepared you are, the better you’ll do!
I used to freak out when final exams came around before I figured out exactly which study tactics worked for me. Finals can be really daunting so it’s best to start early and make sure you cover all of your bases before exam time.
Here are 8 things you need to do before finals to snag an A:
Organize Your Notes
This might seem like such a menial task, but it's really important. You probably have pages of doodles and papers all jumbled up in your notebook. Organize your notes so that everything is neat and easy to find. Try to put your notes in chronological order too. It really helps!
Make A List Of What You Have The Most Trouble With
While you're going through your notes, write down the topics you have the most trouble with. Knowing what you need to spend more time focusing on is extremely helpful when you're actually studying.
Ask What You Need To Focus On For Your Exams
Even if you have a cumulative exam, your teacher might focus some topics more than others. It doesn't hurt to ask exactly what you need to be studying for your final. Also feel free to ask what types of questions. I was always the brave soul to ask, and the majority of my teachers would give us the breakdown of multiple choice, short answer, essay and other questions types.
Make A Study Guide For Each Exam
Even if you're positive that you're going to ace a test, make a study guide to outline your notes, keywords, definitions, equations and whatever else you want to include.
Prioritize Your Studying
After making your study guides (which will also help you review your info!), prioritize your studying by which classes you need to spend the most time on. If you're going to kick butt on your English exam and it's on the last day, you probably should study for your other exams first.
Organize A Study Group
I personally wasn't great with studying in groups, but I know it really helps a lot of students. Get together some people from your class to compare notes and ask each other questions. Some of your classmates might have info that you missed in class and vice versa.
Go To Extra Help Sessions
Go to extra help even if you don't need it! Some of my teachers would actually give out exam questions if you came to extra help sessions after school. And you also might get some useful info from your teacher that they didn't mention in class. You never know!
Talk To Your Teacher Directly
If you're especially worried about an exam, go talk to your teacher directly. If anything, they'll be able to give you some peace of mind if they aren't worried about your performance. I would always talk to my chemistry professor before exams and tests, and he always gave me helpful info or would go over things I didn't understand until it clicked.
