There are a lot of things I love about the beach, and one of them is how my hair looks whenever I’m there. The salt water makes my hair wavy and curly, and it’s perfect for summer nights. Actually, it’s perfect year-round, but it’s difficult to achieve that look without going in the ocean, and I live in New York, so… the next best thing is DIY beach waves!
If your hair is naturally wavy, you can get beach waves really easily simply by using a good beach waves spray and letting your hair air-dry – that’s what I do. But if you don’t have naturally wavy hair, getting that effortless summer look is a little more difficult. Luckily, there’s Pinterest, where you can find lots of different hair hacks, tips and tricks on how to get beach waves anytime of the year. These are great whenever, but are especially perfect for the spring and summer weather. Want to get the look? Check out these 12 tips:
1. First, get an amazing beach waves product, like Oribe Surfcomber Mousse.
I am OBSESSED with Oribe’s beach waves products. I just tried Surfcomber Mousse, and it’s my new favorite thing. All you need is a small amount, which you can scrunch through damp hair, and then let it air-dry. It works so well (two people told me I really did look like I was just at the beach), and it smells good. You can buy it here. Investing in a good product will really help make your waves look awesome.
Another option is Bumble & Bumble’s Surf Spray
If you want a spray instead of a mousse, try Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray. There’s a reason it’s so popular – it works really well! I love mine, and the bottle is so easy to carry around. You can buy it here.
2. Or make your own DIY beach waves spray!
3. Scrunch product into your hair, then dry with a diffuser.
If you need your hair dry ASAP, try this method. Also, I love Paul Mitchell’s Ultimate Wave Beachy Texture Cream! It’s perfect for naturally wavy hair.
4. Use a curling iron
After you curl your hair, make sure you tousle it so that the curls are loose and more wavy than stiff and prim. Also, you MUST spray some sea salt onto your hair to give it that beachy texture.
5. Try headband curls
If you want waves overnight, try headband curls. I do this all the time and it works – I twist the hair before I wrap it around the headband for a more wavy look.
6. If you have natural hair, wear it in a braid.
You can keep the braid in all day, or overnight – when you take it out and spray some product on it, you’ll have great waves!
7. Use twisted buns to get easy, no-heat waves.
Apply your desired beach waves product to damp hair, then twist it up into buns. I would suggest doing this overnight, and spraying it once more for texture when you take the buns out.
8. Add socks to keep frizz away.
To be honest, this seems unnecessarily complicated. But if it works for you, go for it!
9. Use a curling iron AND twists.
If you want a subtle wave, try twisting your hair before curling it.
10. Wear French braids overnight.
Do a simple French braid before bed, then wake up to waves!
11. Use rollers for a softer look.
Rollers are great if you don’t want to curl your hair or want to try a no-heat method. But definitely make sure to add product to this so it looks more texturized.
12. Twist and go!
Apply product, twist hair, let sit. Take out and voila!
