Sex kind of seems like one of those things that would be hard to mess up… but it’s not. It’s definitely not. If you’ve been hooking up for a while, you know that there is a very real difference between great sex and terrible sex (we’ve all had terrible sex before). This is why people are constantly searching for ways to have better sex.
There is a ton of advice out there on how to have better sex. Seriously, there is so much advice out there that it can be more than a little overwhelming. That’s why, sometimes, we turn to science for answers – because it seems more legit. As it turns out, there are a lot of studies out there on how to have great sex, or what kinds of things or personality traits allow you to have better sex. These studies are interesting, but I sort of have a hard time taking them too seriously when there are so many of them. I mean, if you read all the studies out there on how to have good sex, you’d probably find that nearly every group of people is actually having the best sex, and that… doesn’t make any sense.
A lot of these things seem pretty ridiculous right off the bat. But if you look into them, you can see how they might make a little more sense. Here are 15 things that will make you have better sex, according to science.
Being Positive and OpenProbably the newest study out there on having better sex is this one that found that your personality can affect what type of sex life you have. Researchers discovered that extroverts have better sex than introverts. This isn't just because of shyness though. The researchers believe that the more positive you are and the more open to new experiences you are, the better sex you'll have. So, introverts can have great sex also - as long as they're positive. That makes sense! Source: ShutterStock
Owning an Android PhoneThis one is so weird that I'm kind of convinced it was just a coincidence. A Match.com survey found that Android users have better sex, want sex more often, are more liberal about sex, and are more likely to orgasm during sex. I can't even come up with a reason as to why this might be true, so... I'm skeptical.
Using LubeOne of the most obvious studies of all time found that people who use lubricant have better sex than people who don't. Um, duh. No one needed to do a study to tell us that. Lube makes things work a lot easier down there, and it's whole purpose is to make sex feel better! Good to know it's working, I guess. Source: ShutterStock
Getting Breast ImplantsRecent research discovered that after getting breast implants, women reported having better sex. However, researchers also found that women who had stretch marks after the procedure did not report the same. There are two possible explanations for this: one, women who get breast implants feel more confident after their surgery, which in turn leads to more enjoyment during sex. Two, as one researcher points out, the women may be looking for reasons to justify all of the time and money they spent on their procedure. The effort they put into it is really what makes them say the sex is better. Source: ShutterStock
Open CommunicationThis study makes so much sense to me that I didn't even need a study to tell me it's true. Researchers found that those who communicate more openly and honestly have better sex lives. This is because these people are willing to talk about what they like and don't like, and what they want out of a sexual experience. Of course you're going to have a better hookup if you take control! Source: ShutterStock
Being LoudFor those of you wondering if moaning is a turn-off, wonder no more. A 2013 study found a direct correlation between people who are noisy in bed and better sexual experiences. This makes a ton of sense. If your partner is moaning and sighing happily in bed, you know you're doing a good job - that immediately gives you a boost of confidence and can make you feel great, allowing yourself to relax and enjoy the sex. And making noise in bed also gets you more into the action, which can result in a better orgasm. Source: ShutterStock
Being A FeministOne study found that feminists have better sex - and not only that, but they also have happier and more stable relationships. It makes a lot of sense. Feminists feel that men and women are equal, so they don't feel guilty about having sex, and they know that they deserve pleasure just as much as the man does. Feminists also see people as people, not just a means to an end, as researchers point out - this helps them pick better partners. Source: ShutterStock
Quitting SmokingHere's another interesting one: researchers in Hong Kong found that people who quit smoking have better sex lives. This is because smoking cigarettes actually can negatively affect your sex life. I'd imagine that it's also because those people who are quitting feel proud of themselves for their accomplishments - feelings like that can lead to better sex. Source: ShutterStock
Being RichA recent study that made a lot of headlines was one that said that rich people are having better sex. In a Spanish study, researchers found a correlation between wealthy participants and those who rated their sexual experiences highly. They tried to explain it by saying that the people with more money were more in tune with what they want in the bedroom. This is definitely an interesting finding, but I'd like to see a broader study. Source: ShutterStock
Being A ConservativeA Match.com survey found that conservative Republicans are the people having the best sex out there, which is probably confusing to a lot of liberal Democrats. Researchers gave no hints as to why this result came up, and I'm having a hard time figuring it out myself. I'd love to see another study on the topic. Source: ShutterStock
Living In MiamiI guess there was a legit reason that Will Smith wrote that steamy song all about Miami. The same survey that found that Android users have better sex also found that people who live in Miami have more orgasms. Who knows why? Maybe it's because Miami is so sexy. Source: ShutterStock
Being Super SmartOkay, so this study doesn't exactly say that smart people have better sex, it just says that smart people have more sex. Researchers believe that this is because smarter people are more open-minded, so they're more open about sex, and probably are more willing to try different things. They basically linked an open sex life with intelligence. I definitely think that being open-minded leads to better sex. Source: ShutterStock
Losing WeightAnother recent study found that losing weight can lead to better sex. This makes sense for two reasons: one, as people lose weight, their hormone levels may change, so things in their body could be different. Two, people who lose weight are proud of themselves for their achievements and most likely feeling more confident. Confidence always allows you to have better sex! This isn't directly because of losing weight - the better sex comes from people feeling good about themselves. Source: ShutterStock
Being A VegetarianFellow veggies, rejoice: a study from about two years ago found that vegetarians may be having better sex. This is because vegetarians typically eat more tofu and plant-based products, most of which can influence your hormone levels and heighten a sexual experience. Moral of the story? If you want to have better sex, eat more tofu and veggies! Maybe? Source: ShutterStock
Doing YogaAn older study done in 2008 found that people who practice yoga have better sex, and higher levels of arousal. This is probably because the whole practice of yoga is about relaxation and mindfulness. If you're more aware of and in tune with your body, you would definitely be more comfortable and aware while having sex. And, as we've said before, being relaxed is pretty important when it comes to having great orgasms. Go work on your downward dog, girl! Source: ShutterStock
Do you think these studies are legit or are you skeptical? What do you think makes you have better sex? What did we forget to include? Tell me in the comments.
