Valentine’s Day is only a few weeks away, and it’s time to start planning those gifts. Whether you’ve been dating someone for a long time or are in a new relationship, gifts are likely involved in your V-Day plans unless you’ve discussed otherwise. One Valentine’s Day I got something that was way too over-the-top for the time we had been dating. Another V-Day, I got an IOU from my then-BF.
I personally think the key to having a great Valentine’s Day is managing your expectations, and hopefully your partner is doing the same. When picking out a gift for your Valentine, just make sure to avoid these 8 common mistakes at all costs.
Novelty gifts can be really cute and funny, but that shouldn't be THE gift. If you want to get your boo some silly V-Day boxers, that's totally cool as a gag gift. Just make sure you get him a real gift too so you can reveal it after you prank him.
No. Nope. No way. Stop. Do not get his or her robes. Don't get matching sweatshirts. Don't get those t-shirts that say "I'm with him" and "I'm with her." Do the exact opposite of what Nike wants, and just do not do it.
Tickets For Events Months In Advance
This is just a general gift no-no. Don't get tickets or plan something that's, like, six months in the future. I'm not saying your relationship won't last, but if you do break up, that's a waste. If you want to go to a concert or something, go to something within the next few weeks.
Gifts That Are Really For You
Like novelty gifts, buying sexy lingerie for yourself is like a gift bonus. This gift is really for you when you think about it. Sure, your partner gets to see you looking hot, but that's it.
Nothing says "I love you!" like last-minute chocolates from the local CVS. Don't just show up to your V-Day date with a shrink-wrapped box to give to your boo. It comes off as thoughtless. If you want to give them candy, get a huge bag of their favorite candy instead.
Super Extravagant Gifts
Don't hand over some crazy expensive or elaborate gift. It's overwhelming and so unnecessary. Stick to something simple or something thoughtful instead. Over-the-top gifts don't seem genuine.
At least give them a card!
Anything Pertaining To A Wedding
ABSOLUTELY NOT. Do not share your secret wedding Pinterest board. Do not pass GO. Do not collect $200.
