There are a lot of crappy phrases out there that need to be played out, but one that really grinds my gears is “boys will be boys.”
Boys beating each other up on the playground. Oh, boys will be boys.
Boys shoveling food down their throats like vultures. Oh, boys will be boys.
Boys taking advantage of scantily clad girls at parties. Oh, boys will be boys.
Wait…that last bit sounds really wrong, doesn’t it? But this mantra is definitely maintained no matter how vile a guy’s actions are. The idea that boys just emerge out of the womb to be violent, insensitive jerks is ridiculous, but what’s more ridiculous are the excuses made for their actions at the expense of girls and women.
This excuse is always awful, but it’s especially bad in seven of the following scenarios. Let me know if you agree!
Sexual HarassmentIt's amazing, the lengths that people will go to excuse boys for sexually harassing girls. I mean, even rape cases leave people shrugging their shoulders and excusing men's behavior, as if men are inherently sociopaths and will obviously rape a girl who is passed out at a party. No, that's unacceptable. Source: Clueless/Paramount Pictures
General ThoughtlessnessOkay, not everyone--male or female, straight relationship, queer relationship, whatever--is going to be the type of person to care about anniversaries and important plans that they've made with their S.O. But it's almost laughable how much guys are let off the hook for not remembering those kind of things. Apparently being aware of a one year anniversary or remembering a dinner date is a "girl" thing? Uh, whatever. Source: Fresh Prince/NBC Universal
CheatingOh, I'm sure you've heard this one: Guys can't control themselves! Monogamy goes against a man's nature! Blah blah blah, BS study after BS study. There's no excuse for being a cheater, and there's no real reason that guys are let off the hook for this a lot easier than women. Source: That 70s Show/Fox
Being AggressiveAn overly aggressive jerk is an overly aggressive jerk. Using testosterone as an excuse for throwing a fit is absurd. It's just...being a jerk. I'm including bullying and teasing in this, too. This starts at an early age, of course. A boy roughhousing with a girl or pulling her hair or generally being a jerk is just brushed off as the boy's way of expressing his crush. But that doesn't mean that it's okay for some little boy to tug on a little girl's ponytail! Nah. Source: Skins/E4
Being A PigPlenty of girls are gross and have bad hygiene and uncouth mannerisms. They're seen as unladylike, right? So why are dudes who are just as gross with bad hygiene and uncouth mannerisms just bein' a guy? Being gross is being gross, am I right? Source: Peanuts
Unsolicited SextingI think we should live in a world where, at the very least, we expect that a guy can control his urge to send pictures of his sex organs to random people he wants to get off with. Source: Shutterstock
Joking About RapeMaking rape jokes is never okay. Never. The fact that this is a pretty common activity for guys gives me a bad taste in my mouth. Don't let them get away with it! Any guy who doesn't stop making those jokes after being called out on it is a scumbag, period. Source: The Inbetweeners/E4
What other times have you heard “boys will be boys” as an excuse? Do you think some behavior is really just attributed to guys being guys? Tell us in the comments?
