There are a lot of ways to be a bad girlfriend that we’re all guilty of from time to time and that’s honestly okay, as long as you’re doing the right thing most of the time. While your number one goal in life should never be to the world’s number one girlfriend, you should try to be your best self in a relationship, because don’t you expect your boyfriend to be a good BF? Yes. Anyway, whether it’s your first relationship or your 10th, here are 12 tips on how to be the best girlfriend ever… for your sanity and his.
Respect His Opinions, But Don't Agree With EverythingWhen you're in a relationship, it's really important for both of you to respect the other person's opinion - but don't think that means you have to agree on everything, because you definitely don't. In fact, a good guy wants you to have your own opinions that you stand by! Don't tell your BF what he thinks is stupid, but feel free to explain what you think, even if it's different. My boyfriend loves when I speak my mind because it shows confidence. If a guy wants you to agree with him 100 percent of the time, that's controlling. Source: ShutterStock
Give Him ComplimentsI feel like, a lot of the time, girls get so caught up in feeling like their boyfriends should be showering them with compliments that they forget to do the same thing. Listen, guys might not always show it, but the truth is, they love compliments just as much as any girl does. You don't need to compliment him every single time you see him, but a few nice words here and there are really important. Say things like, "Wow, you look really good in that shirt" or "you're so funny!" when he makes you laugh. Don't be fake about it - say what you're thinking! It will show him you appreciate him and make him feel good. Source: ShutterStock
Let Him Have Time To Himself SometimesI know it's tempting to spend every second of every day with your boyfriend, but please don't. Relationships that become all consuming like this are doomed to end. Even if he says he doesn't want it, every guy (and girl) needs some time to themselves once in a while, whether it's to sleep, binge watch TV or go out with their friends without you. Don't get insulted - encourage him to do his own thing sometimes. He'll really appreciate it and will think you're so great because you let him have his guy's nights. Plus, even the short time apart will make him more excited to see you. Source: ShutterStock
Don't Be Afraid To Have A Sense Of HumorIt's basically a fact that most guys out there love a girl with a sense of humor - so don't be afraid to show yours off! But make sure it's your sense of humor, not his. Show him that side of you, even if it's "weird" or different. It's part of what makes you you! Also, don't be afraid to laugh at yourself in front of him. Taking yourself too seriously is a turnoff. Everyone appreciates someone who can laugh at their mistakes sometimes. It shows confidence and makes you seem very sure of yourself. Source: ShutterStock
Listen When He Needs To Talk, But Don't Push Him Before He's ReadyThis is an important one, because pushing a guy to talk before he's ready can seriously push him far away. Here's the thing: there are some guys out there who are in touch with their emotions and have no problem crying to their girlfriend. But a lot of guys have been trained to not be emotional. They're afraid to be vulnerable and when they're upset, their first instinct is not always to call and vent to you. A lot of guys like to take time to work things out on their own. If you're dating a guy like this, you need to make it clear that you're there to listen when he's ready to talk. Give him some time to cool off, then wait to see if he says anything or bring up the topic again. But I guarantee he will appreciate it either way. Source: ShutterStock
Send Flirty Texts Throughout The Day SometimesDon't forget to flirt, especially if you've been dating for a while! Flirting with your boyfriend is showing him that you're still totally into him. To get him excited to see you or just to make him smile, send him a few flirty texts during the day sometimes. They don't have to be crazy sexual, they can just be cute, like, "I can't wait to see you later ;)" or something like that. And don't go overboard either. Just one every once in a while is perfect. Be Open To Trying New ThingsTrying new things together is something every couple should be doing, especially if you've been dating for a while. It can be easy for things to get boring and stale, so show off a sense of adventure and make it clear to your boyfriend that you're willing to try new things with him. This doesn't mean you have to let him do that sexual act he wants to do that you're not into - this doesn't mean that at all. Just be open to stuff that doesn't make you uncomfortable, whether it's hooking up stuff or a sport he's really into that you've never tried. Source: ShutterStock
Encourage and Push Him To Follow His DreamsA great girlfriend always encourages her boyfriend to follow his dreams and to do the things that make him happy - just a like a great boyfriend does the same for his girlfriend. Get to know your BF, then gently push him in the right direction. Support what he wants and be happy for him when he's successful. This is really about you supporting him and not making him feel stupid or silly. Source: ShutterStock
Be Nice To His FriendsEven if your boyfriend's friends are annoying and loud people you've never normally associate with, you have to be nice to them. Being nice to his friends shows that you respect your boyfriend. Unless his friends are total jerks who are mean to you, give them the benefit of the doubt and be polite. You don't need to be BFF's, you just need to be nice! Source: ShutterStock
Keep His SecretsAs someone who spends most of her life gossiping, I know how hard it can be to keep juicy stories a secret sometimes. But when it comes to your boyfriend, you have to. If he tells you something he's never told anyone before, respect that by keeping it to yourself - not running to your best friend to tell her everything. If he talks angrily about his friends, don't tell them. If one night during sex he goes soft... keep it to yourself, okay? Source: ShutterStock
Trust Him and Don't Snoop Through His StuffThis is a big one. If you're dating someone, you need to learn to trust that person. Questioning your boyfriend's every move or snooping through his phone and Facebook is disrespectful and hurtful, especially if he's never done anything wrong. Don't violate his privacy by going through things that are none of your business. If you can't trust your boyfriend or believe what he tells you, why are you with him? Source: ShutterStock
Don't Assume, Talk Things OutOne of the most important rules in any kind of relationship is: don't assume. Before you make assumptions of any kind, be courteous enough to talk to your boyfriend. Don't listen to a rumor and believe it's true before you ask him about it. Don't hear him say something the wrong way and guess that you know what he means before he corrects himself. Give him the benefit of the doubt and always, always talk things out. Source: ShutterStock
