14 New Years Resolutions That Every Girl Should Make

New Year’s resolutions can seem pretty pointless when they never actually work. I’m sure you’ve made some over the years, or you’ve seen your parents start the year off with some lofty goals of their own. In the end they almost always fail.

So what’s the point, right?

Well, resolutions that aren’t about vowing to drop 5 pants sizes in a month’s time are a little more doable. And resolutions based on loving yourself rather than punishing yourself are also a lot more appealing. Oh, and it helps when your resolutions are actually, you know, fun.

That’s what we’re hoping you get out of these 14 resolutions that every girl should make for 2014. From accepting your body to going to more concerts, we’ve got a whole host of ways to help you make 2014 a better and more fulfilling year. Good luck!

Stop Hating Your Body

Look, nobody is completely happy with their bodies. Nobody. But when we find more about our bodies to hate, critique and shame than embrace or at least tolerate, that's when things get dicey. You don't have to love your "love handles" but you can at least learn not to hate them. You might not have the thighs you want, but that doesn't mean you can't look great in a pair of skinny jeans. Hating your body isn't productive and it only makes us miserable and self-conscious about every little thing. Life is too short, girl!

Make New Friends

This should definitely be a goal for those of you starting college this year. But this is also important for those of you who have stuck to your same friendship bubble for years. Spread your wings, girl. Talk to that cool girl who hangs out in the library. What's the worst that could happen? Lifelong Friendships have formed from weirder circumstances, so don't limit yourself.

Make Peace With Your Family

If you have regular falling outs with your family, try to at least not get into so many spats. Yeah, your sister might be a pain but she's your sister. Yeah, your dad might be hard to open up to, but take baby steps and start to build a better relationship with them in your own way in your own time.

Speak Up

This is hard, even for loud mouths like me. If you see something you think is wrong or unfair, say something! You'll feel better about yourself knowing that you made a stand, even if the outcome isn't perfect.

Try To Break A Bad Habit

This is a tough one. I make this resolution every year and the results are usually, well, not that great. But at least go into the new year with some positive intentions. Stop biting your nails. Try to be a less flaky friend. Quit pulling your hair so much

Go To More Gigs

If you're a lover of music like I am, you probably live for concerts. Go to more of them! Not just your favorite bands who may or may not swing around to your town. Go to cool venues that host lesser known acts, too! You might meet some awesome people and have a new favorite band to tell all your friends about!

Don't Take Crap From Anyone

Don't let people walk all over you. Stand up for yourself! Did someone say something to you that you think was racist/sexist/homophobic/ableist? Tell them that that made you uncomfortable. It's scary to do that, especially when those people are our friends or family, but if that person isn't complete garbage and cares about you they'll listen and take note.

Be Nicer To Yourself

Again, easier said than done but it's important to be gentle with yourself. Always remind yourself that it is not the end of the world if you eff up. You aren't a bad person for it and you're not a failure. You have some really rad qualities going for you and people who don't agree can swerve.

Stop Slut Shaming

Most of us have been taught, one way or another, to think less of women who do things that society considers promiscuous or brazenly sexual. Unlearn that and, instead, learn not to give a damn.

Tell The People You Love That You Love Them

This is so important. You might have a friend out there who is hurting and feels lonely and needs your support. Even if that's not the case, it's really great to get in touch with your friends and really let them know that you love the crap out of them. Get mushy with your friends, y'all.

I love the last advice. I value it so much because I just lost a friend to suicide and I never got the chance to tell her I loved her. It was such a shock to me.
