One of the worst things about getting your period is cramps. Sometimes they can be mild and other times they can be absolutely debilitating. Before I went on birth control, I would get such bad cramps that I’d have to stay home from school. I literally couldn’t get out of bed and would nearly break down in tears every time because they were so painful.
I tried everything I could to make my cramps go away and was so relieved when I went on birth control that they were at least manageable. I was still in pain because, well, cramps suck. But I could finally get out of bed. Birth control combined with a lot of Advil and stretching and lying in weird positions helped.
It turns out there are a lot of weird remedies for menstrual cramps, and here are some that actually work!
I know, right? I'm confused too, it's okay. Apparently, new studies show that Viagra, or sildenafil citrate, can reduce pelvic pain because it leads to the dilation of blood vessels.
Chamomile has higher amounts of two cramp-fighting compounds, glycine and hippurate. Glycine acts to relax the uterus while hippurate is an anti-inflammatory. According to a study, chamomile tea works wonders with period cramps.
Cinnamon contains high amounts of manganese, which can help relieve menstrual symptoms like cramps. It's also an anti-inflammatory. Don't eat a spoonful of cinnamon or anything, but feel free to add some to your breakfast or in a cup of warm milk.
I had no idea peppermint was such a super-herb! Apparently, it's good for a lot of things including reducing cramps. It's a antispasmodic, which means it can relieve stomach pains and cramps. Get yourself some peppermint tea for the quickest results.
Drinking water is good for you all the time, but especially when you're on your period. Staying hydrated will help reduce bloating, but drinking warm or hot water can help ease the pain of cramps.
That's right, the big O can help shut down those pesky cramps. I know having sex on your period is messy and you might not feel great, but you don't have to have sex to have an orgasm! Give yourself a little love on your own to help relax your uterus and get rid of those cramps.
Some folks over on Yahoo! Answers suggested using your laptop charger to relieve cramps because it acts like a heating pad. Just go ahead and get a heating pad.
