Comments Of The Week: Body Image Problems And Advice

Everybody has body image issues. Yep, even the people who look like they were built in a special lab made especially for creating the perfect body feel self-conscious about something. Someone with perfect skin might feel embarrassed about their thighs. Someone who is a size 2 might have cystic acne and fear leaving the house. Someone who might be viewed as fat in our society might embrace their size but hate the flatness of their hair.

Nobody is safe. There’s always something about ourselves that we wish was different or would improve if we had a magic wand. But we’re humans, imperfect creatures who have to either learn to love or at least tolerate our bodies or hate ourselves for the rest of our lives.

I don’t know about you, but I know which sounds preferable.

Check 10 of our readers’ comments about their body image woes and see if our advice helps you feel a little more confident.

Unfortunately, a lot of mass produced clothes don't fit many bodies very well. Back in the day when getting our clothes tailored was more commonplace, this wasn't as big of an issue. But now we assume that if we don't fit into a pair of pants properly then we're the problem.

I have a large chest too so I know how you feel. However, while this is easier said than done, those boobs aren't going away so you might as well embrace them for what they are. While a lot of clothes are designed with flat chested bodies in mind, that doesn't mean you can't take advantage of any of those styles! Rock 'em in a way that makes you feel comfortable and confident.

Porn can definitely be problematic and lead people to have some really fanciful expectations of how a woman's body look. From tucked labias to full body waxes, it can be hard not to feel as if you're not hot if you don't look like those women. But unless your BF starts to pressure you to act and look like those girls in those cheesy porno videos, you shouldn't take this too personally. Unless he's going out trying to find a gal with the perfect porn star body, you're still the only one he has eyes for.

Those folks can kiss your butt, honestly. People go around acting like they're certified nutritionists and doctors and assume that they know exactly what your body needs or doesn't need just by looking at you. Health isn't just about the way you look. Bodies are all different and it sucks that people don't seem to understand that.

I see what you're saying, but one doesn't have to be stick thin to pull off leggings as pants. Honestly, if the material is opaque it shouldn't really matter. Leggings usually work well as a layering piece but if you want to wear a t-shirt or a crop top with them, it doesn't really matter as long as you're okay with form fitting apparel!

And you shouldn't shave if you don't want to! Guys need a serious reality check: Shaving takes time, time that many of us would rather spend doing anything else besides getting all pruned in the shower as we try to groom ourselves. Honestly, I hope that becoming less weirded out by body hair is something that comes with age, because these dudes are in for a rude awakening if they end up married.

As a fellow 5'10 chick, I definitely understood that weird feeling of equating my height and size to something...not very dainty. I remember that whenever I'd accidentally step on the foot of a petite classmate and hear her howling in pain or when I'd see my tinier friends curling up comfortably in a computer chair, I'd feel like a lumbering oaf. But you'll learn to embrace your height, honestly. There are plenty of advantages and there is nothing manly about it. There are so many other tall women in this world and their femininity is never questioned just because they're tall!

Ultimately, it's your prerogative to do what you want to feel more comfortable about your body. It makes sense that you're frustrated about people brushing this off when they don't know what it feels like, but it is definitely worth acknowledging that we're never going to adhere to the perfect body standards that this society places on us...and we have to be okay with that or else we'll be miserable for the rest of our lives.

It's good that there is a guy in your life who makes you feel awesome about yourself. Having a good support system is never a bad thing! But it's important not to depend entirely on someone else for your self-confidence and acceptance of your body image. It's important that you yourself accepts your body before anyone else does.

I am really self conscious about my weight and my body. I dance and do cheerleading and I am not really “fat” but I weigh a lot more than I look because I have a lot of muscle. my muscle also makes my arms and thighs look big which I really don’t like. I have slight acne which I hide with makeup. I have been told that I’m really pretty on many occasions but I don’t know if they’re lying to make me feel better or not. I really hope my body image problems get better

I’m 16 right now and I have curves, large boobs for my size, quite a large bottom, and weigh about 110 lbs while being about 5’7 or 8. I don’t gain much weight but I eat food very often in small snacks. I’d like to eat better and exercise but I’ve been so focused on body hair, it makes me feel like less of a girl even though my mom says it’s normal. Not to mention I get acne on my face, chest, and back which isn’t helping my self esteem at the moment but still surely go away later on. It’s natural but I just hope my worries will go away
