So I’m obsessed with The Hunger Games, and I’m pretty much losing it over the impending release of Catching Fire. I cannot wait! I’ve watched the trailer a billion times and have been having some serious envy over Katniss’ hair. Obviously, Katniss is known for having exceptional braids.
In the Catching Fire trailer, she’s rocking an amazing half-up braided style. It’s technically a 7-strand braid, which is really complicated so I wanted to simplify it for this tutorial. The great thing about this style is that you can customize it and change it up. You could braid the rest of your hair, put it in a ponytail or bun or even follow the same braid pattern in the back. So many options!

Start With Curled Hair
I used John Frieda's Loose Curls 1 1/4-inch barrel curling iron to get big, flowy curls. Katniss has loose waves so the looser the curl, the better.
Create A 3-Inch Section Of Hair
You want this braid to be pretty thick, so grab a good amount of hair above your ear.
Flip It Over
Since we're crossing these braids to make a braid crown, you want to braid them upside-down. Flip your section over so you can braid in the opposite direction.
Start as close to the beginning of your section as possible. It's okay if it starts a little messy because you're going to be able to cover mistakes with the other braid.
Pin Back Section 1 And Create Section 2
Pin your first braid into place for now. Grab the same amount of hair as you did with section one.
Flip & Braid
Braid it the same way!
Cross Your Braids
Take your braids and cross them over each other. Pin one side into place while you work on the other side, we're almost done!
Braid Into Your Hair
Pull some hair from behind your ear and French braid it into your already braided section. You want to braid backwards now. Do the same on the other side.
Pin Back The Sides
When you reach the end of your hair, pin the sections into place on the back of your head. You can pin the braids into each other or leave the back as a regular half-up ponytail.
Ta-da, you're Katniss! You can leave your hair half down or braid the rest of it. You can put it in a bun. If you want serious Katniss braids, take the bottom section of your hair and repeat this process in the back!
How cool does this look? If it feels loose at all, just wiggle some bobby pins in between your braids.
