I’m really terrible at doing things for myself. I’ve always been this way, and I suspect I get it from my mom because she always takes care of everyone else before taking care of herself. It’s not a bad thing to put others before you, but it is bad when you forget about yourself.
This morning, I saw on The Huffington Post that women would rather give up sex than alone time. Celestial Seasonings surveyed 500 women, and 76 percent said they need “me time.” I found this really refreshing, but then it made me upset because 42 percent said they get less than an hour of “me time” per day. AND that 75 percent admitted to telling white lies in order to squeeze in that “me time.” That is not okay!
Time to yourself is so important. I know because I always forget to give myself some time and then I freak out and have to recharge for a whole weekend. Having “me time” isn’t selfish, it’s necessary. You have to take care of yourself and your well-being before you take care of anyone else in order to be a productive human.
I challenge all of you to start making some time for yourself every single day. Here are 10 things you can do to give yourself “me time.”
I'm not a big sleeper and almost refused to sleep in high school, but trust me, naps are everything. Take a 20 minute power-nap and you will feel amazing. If you can't sleep, just rest with your eyes closed for a while.
Reorganize Your Tech Life
When was the last time you backed up your computer or your phone? Have you organized your iPhoto library lately? I'm sure there are some Facebook pics that need untagging. Spend time getting your tech life in tip-top shape.
Have A Spa Day
This is one of my favorite things to do for myself. Grab a face mask, paint your nails, exfoliate, do a hair treatment. Turn your bathroom into a luxurious spa.
Reorganize Your Room
I did this yesterday, and it felt amazing. Reorganize your room or just your closet at the very least. If you haven't worn or used something in a year, donate it.
This is one of the best things to do for some rest and relaxation. Pick up a new book or revisit an old favorite. Spend at least an hour involved in a good read.
You can either meditate or just sit and relax. You don't have to do anything. Grab a cup of tea or coffee and sit outside or in your living room to clear your head.
Take A Walk
Sometimes if I'm feeling really stressed out, I'll just go for a walk around my block. It's nice to just get out of the house and wander around for a while.
Take A Bath
Baths are amazing, and you are seriously missing out if you're not taking them. Light a bunch of candles, fill your bath up with a bunch of bubbles and take a soak.
Spend Time On A Hobby
Whether you have a hobby already or want to start a new one, this is the perfect way to spend your alone time. Devote at least an hour a day to a new project, and you'll have it done in no time!
You haven't lived until you've binge-watched The Hills or Friday Night Lights. Just ask me or Jess. Seriously. Watch an old favorite show or take up a new one that you missed and let yourself escape into TV.
