I’ve been doing Halloween for quite a while. I’ve gone in funny costumes, pop culture costumes, animal costumes and sexy costumes. I have a lot of Halloween experience, and I’ve figured out the exact right amount of skin to show in your costume. Are you ready for it?
However much skin you’re comfortable with!
I don’t know when the “sexy” Halloween thing started. I feel like it’s been around for a while, but we’re just being bombarded constantly with SEXY PIZZA SLICE, SEXY MRS. POTATO HEAD, SEXY FORTUNE COOKIE. (All real options, by the way.) Every single food, profession and character has a sexy version. And it’s 100% cool if you want to be a sexy hotdog.
But there are so many sexy costume options out there and a significant lack of everything else. In fact, there are so many sexy costumes available at party stores that high school senior Maya Behn started a petition against Party City to get more options. This petition isn’t calling out sexy costumes, but it points out that there aren’t a lot of other costumes for girls in the party world.
“We feel that it is necessary to make more options more plentiful and accessible to the majority of the population– many adolescent females have difficulties with self-esteem, especially with regard to their bodies, and the major presence of impractical costume choices for women helps to serve as a constant reminder of these insecurities to some girls. In addition, boys aren’t the only ones who want to look like Captain America for a night. We understand that Halloween is a time for people to dress up however they want, and that many choose to dress the way you’ve presented in your women’s choices. We do not respect these choices any less, The problem is not that these costumes are being sold. The problem is that they are the only option. We simply ask that Party City increases its selection of realistic costumes that express a variety of comfort levels and interests.”
This petition points out a lot of things that many girls and women are feeling around this time of year. No one cares if you want to be sexy on Halloween. But no one cares if you don’t want to be sexy either. There should be options for everyone!
If you want to be scary on Halloween, have at it. Go terrify some small children! If you want to dress up with your friends like the Jonas Brothers, great! (My friends did that costume in college, but this year it’s pop culture relevant!) The beauty of Halloween is that you get to be whatever (well, don’t be offensive) you want for a night! You can dress up as a guy, you can be a superhero, you can be a pinata.
The main rule for Halloween is that you’re comfortable with your costume. You should be personally comfortable with how much or how little skin you’re showing off. If you want to show off skin, we support you. If you don’t, we support you. Either way, you’ll still acquire a bunch of candy at the end of the night and that’s really what matters.
