In honor of one of the best Instagram hashtags ever and one of the best holidays ever, we’re doing a very special #ThrowbackThursday post of our favorite old Halloween costumes. In case you guys couldn’t tell from all of our awesome spooky posts (if we do say so ourselves), the Gurl girls love Halloween. You get free candy but also, you get to dress up in costumes. And costumes are awesome.
It’s always so much fun to dress up as someone else for the day, but for me, the best thing about costumes is seeing who is the most creative. Anyone can go to the store and buy a cheap costume, but it takes effort and love to make your own cute DIY costume. Luckily, I work with some very creative girls (and have a mom who spent a lot of time on my costumes), so all of our Halloween costumes are awesome. Here are our favorite #tbt Halloween costumes. Tell us about yours in the comments!
Julie, Editorial Director, as a grandma in Atlantic City
A few years ago, two of my best friends and I decided to dress up like grandmas going on a girls’ weekend to Atlantic City. I have no idea where this idea came from, but we took it very seriously. We wore sweaters that my grandma sent me, velour pants from my friend’s mom and personalized visors and cups with our made up grandma names. Honestly, no one knew what we actually were, so it was kind of a bust. But, it was one of the most fun Halloween’s I’ve ever had!
Jessica, Associate Editor, as I Dream of Jeannie
I have no idea how old I am in this picture, but this is one of my favorite Halloween costumes I’ve ever worn. I went as Jeanne from the old show I Dream of Jeannie, which was one of my favorite things. I was also really excited to be Jeannie because that’s my godmother’s name and I always idolized her. My mom made me this costume and I loved the sequins the most. I spent the whole day crossing my arms, nodding my head and blinking (Jeannie’s signature move). I would totally be this again if I could.
Caitlin, Editorial Assistant, as an angel
Well, I don’t remember this picture, but my mom said I was almost two-years-old. I was kind of a devil child so this picture is hilarious to me. My mom said that I refused to walk for the majority of my childhood and that me standing in this photo was a rare moment. I was too small for real costumes so she just put a pillowcase on me and gave me a halo. And then I proceeded to be a cat for nine years.
Ashley, Intern, as a Harry Potter flapper
This is me as a random flapperesque witch in 12th grade…I have no idea what I was thinking when I came up with this idea, but I just really wanted to wear this vintage dress that belonged to my mom and I love Harry Potter so I put the two together, I suppose. This definitely doesn’t beat my Princess Jasmine costume back in first or second grade, though. Too bad that photo is somewhere unknown in my house right now!
Meg, Video Producer, as Carmen Sandiego
I love Halloween! As Caitlin pointed out a couple weeks ago, I was indeed Carmen Sandiego one Halloween. I used to watchWhere In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? and play the computer games a lot as a kid. While yes, Carmen is an internationally renowned criminal, she is also a smart, confident, empowered woman, so I’ve always really liked her (I also could really use her geography knowledge because I’m not great with maps). This was such a fun, nostalgic costume that was super easy to put together because my aunt just happened to have the perfect red coat and red trench coat. All night I did my best attempts to hide and be sneaky like Carmen, but I have to admit it was cool that so many people recognized my costume and gave me props for it.
