You know when you’re watching a TV show and suddenly, something about a character seems a little bit… off? It usually takes a minute for you to put your finger on it, but suddenly you’re like, “HOLD ON A SECOND. That’s not the same actor or actress who played that character last season!”
Sometimes, TV shows get a little tricky by switching up the actor or actress who played a certain character. They always try to do this really nonchalantly, like they expect viewers not to notice there is a completely different person in the show. And obviously, none of the other characters acknowledge that anything weird is going on.
But it didn’t get by us! Here are 10 of the most stand-out TV show switches we’ve noticed:
Morgan on Boy Meets WorldI'm not sure why they changed up this character, but for the first few years, Morgan was played by actress Lily Nicksay. Actress Lindsay Ridgeway became Morgan in 1996. They do look pretty similar though!
Aunt Vivian on The Fresh Prince Of Bel-AirI don't remember noticing this back when The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was actually airing, but apparently everyone else does. Janet Hubert-Whitten played Aunt Vivian, AKA Will's mom, at first but was supposedly asked to leave because she had a bad attitude. Once she was basically fired, Daphne Maxwell Reid stepped in.
Kaitlin on The OCBack when I used to watch The OC, I remember vaguely wondering if the same actress had been Kaitlin all along. I also remember thinking, wow, Kaitlin really grew up. Anyway, my hunch was right - Shailene Woodley played Kaitlin back when she was younger and pretty much nonexistent. Willa Holland played Kaitlin when we were all actually reminded that, oh yeah, Marissa had a sister!
Meg on Family GuyIf you watch the first season of Family Guy, you'll notice that Meg has a distinctly different voice than she does now (a lot of things were different in that first season, actually). That's because at that point, she was being played by Lacey Chabert. Later, the role was taken over by Mila Kunis, who I think makes an excellent Meg.
Jason on Pretty Little LiarsIt didn't take long to realize that Jason on Pretty Little Liars was being played by a different actor than the original. That's because the original actor, Parker Bagley, seemed way too old and creepy to be Jason, who would go on to weirdly hit on every girl, especially Aria. The actor who replaced him, Drew Van Acker, is a much better fit.
Winston on New GirlOkay, so New Girl didn't exactly replace this character, but they kind of did. In the pilot, Damon Wayans Jr. played Coach, one of the roommates Jess moved in with. But then he was gone, due to commitments with Happy Endings. Instead of completely replacing Coach the character, they had Lamorne Morris come in as Winston, the new roommate. And actually, Coach is coming back!
Becky on RoseanneLecy Goranson played Becky for a full five years before leaving the show to go to college. It was completely obvious when Sarah Chalke stepped in to replace her. Like, weirdly too obvious.
Jenna Maroney on 30 RockOn the pilot episode of 30 Rock, Rachel Dratch played the character of Jenna Maroney. After some changes, Tina Fey said they decided to use Rachel in a different way and have Jane Krakrowski play Jenna.
Laurie on That '70s ShowLaurie was always kind of a sketchy character on the show, since her character kept, uh, disappearing. Lisa Robin Kelly played her first and after she disappeared for a little while, Christina Moore stepped in. Sadly, Lisa Robin Kelly recently passed away while in rehab.
Derek on Saved By The BellThis one you might not remember, but Derek Morris, the dad on Saved By The Bell was originally played by Robert Pine (Chris Pine's father!) before he was replaced by John Sanderford.
Which of these did you never realize on your own? Which of these were you most surprised by? Tell me in the comments!
