In case you’ve never seen Scream, Drew Barrymore spends the first 15 minutes of the movie crying and looking absolutely terrified. In order to keep her that way, director Wes Craven kept telling her stories about animal cruelty. Drew is a serious animal lover and this was enough to keep her upset.
Wes Craven came up with the idea of using the Ghost Face mask while looking for film locations in California – it was hanging on a wall. He immediately had a similar mask made for the movie. However, Bob Weinstein wasn’t as impressed. He thought the mask looked “idiotic” and wanted to try different ones. When producers refused, he agreed to let them film the Drew Barrymore scene to see how it would look. He was so pleased, he never said anything else about it.
Drew Barrymore was originally set to play the main character, Sidney Prescott. But she turned it down and wanted to play Casey instead, because she felt that if she did, it would make viewers think anything could happen. She was totally right!
Also offered the role of Sidney before Neve Campbell snatched it up? Melissa Joan Hart, Brittany Murphy, Melinda Clarke and Reese Witherspoon. Oh, and Freddie Prinze Jr. auditioned for the role of Stu. This could have been a completely different movie.
The Ghost Face killer was actually based off a real serial killer from Florida called the Gainseville Ripper. Scary.
Fans of Scream might have noticed this, but the Jiffy Pop in the first scene acts as a clock. It starts out normal (like the scene) and as things get insane, so does the Jiffy Pop.
Scream was originally supposed to be called Scary Movie. Later, Scary Movie would become a Scream parody. I think Scream suits a real horror movie much better.
