There’s a myth that the poem Sarah Sanderson sings in the movie is actually a shorter version of an Edgar Allen Poe poem. However, no one has ever been able to confirm that his poem exists… and it doesn’t even seem like something he would write. The poem Sarah sang was actually written for the movie.
Leonardo DiCaprio was originally supposed to play the role of Max, but he ended up turning it down for his role in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. Omri Katz, the actor who ended up playing Max, was initially rejected. This would have been a TOTALLY different movie.
Rosie O’Donnell was originally supposed to play Mary Sanderson, but turned down the role because she didn’t want to be a “scary witch.” I can’t imagine her as Mary, anyway!
After starring in the movie as Sarah Sanderson, Sarah Jessica Parker found out that her 10th great-grandmother had been arrested in Salem in the late 1600s for supposed acts of “witchcraft.” Oh, and also choking a neighbor to death, no big deal. Sarah said that “It has changed everything about who I thought I was.” Guess she starred in the film for a reason!
Bette Midler once told BBC that out of every film she had ever starred in, Hocus Pocus was her favorite one. Who can blame her?!
Hocus Pocus was originally supposed to just be a Disney Channel Original Movie, airing on TV. But execs had such high hopes for it that they ended up putting it in theaters. Good choice, Disney execs.
