Exciting news if you’re a minor in California: you can get your entire digital footprint erased with a simple request. California governor Jerry Brown signed the new law today. Internet companies will have to remove online activity per the request of minors.
This is a pretty huge deal for anyone who wants to completely get rid of things from the interwebs. After all, once something is online, it’s never truly gone even if you personally delete it. The law will go into effect in 2015 and although it doesn’t allow minors to control what other people of them only, it’s a start.
It got me thinking about my internet past. As a product of the internet age, I’ve been involved in online activity since the beginning! There are tons of things that I wish had never been posted that I’d love to erase permanently, and here they are.
Everything Posted About My Exes
I didn't do this a lot, but I know there are some dramalicious old Facebook posts or subtweets about some exes.
My Old LiveJournal, Xanga, Myspace, Etc
I never had LiveJournal, but I had a Xanga. Okay, I had like three Xanga pages. Why? I don't know. I would like everything from Xanga and Myspace to just be GONE. I don't even know if the pages still exist because I didn't use my name, but I hope no one ever finds them.
My AIM Away Messages
Oh good god.
Dumb Photos I Thought Were Cute
Why did I think some things were okay to post on the internet? I don't know. We didn't learn about internet rules back in my day. That face my friends and I thought was soooo funny was actually really embarrassing.
Any Photo Of Me Before The Year 2006
Let's just leave the past in the past.
Things I Wrote On Message Boards
Message boards were really popular when the internet first became a thing. And I argued with a lot of people and said a lot of stupid things.
Old, Old Tweets And Facebook Wall Posts
I don't even know what my first wall post was, but I don't want to know.
Entire Google History
Just get rid of it. Bye.
What would you remove from the internet if you could? Do you think this law is a good thing? Should it be available to everyone and not just minors? Tell us in the comments!
