Since we’re well into the beginning of the school year, I know a lot of you are probably experiencing some early stress. I was a very stressed out student in high school and didn’t really learn stress management until I got to college.
I mean, you’re dealing with a lot! You’ve got classes, homework, tests, extracurricular activities and you’re trying to manage a social life. Sometimes it can be too much. You can do it all, I promise.
There’s nothing wrong with you if you’re feeling super stressed or overwhelmed. It’s all about how you manage it. And instead of letting you just figure it out on your own, I’m going to help you. You may think that studying for 24-hours straight is a good study tactic, but that’s going to stress you our even more.
Check out these 8 ways to manage school stress:
There IS such a thing as studying too much. One of my college professors told me that, and he was right. At a certain point, if you're studying the same thing over and over, your brain isn't going learn any more.
Get Enough Sleep For You
I know science is all "You need 8 hours of sleep" but I am personally not a sleeper. However, you should be getting enough sleep for you to feel well-rested. Also note that pulling an all-nighter does more harm than good.
Re-Write Your Notes
One trick that really helped me retain information was to re-write my notes at the end of the day. Even if I typed notes out, I would hand write them. It helps a lot and when it's time to study for a test, you'll find that you remember a lot more.
Prioritize Your Assignments
It's super easy to get bogged down in assignments, especially if you have a lot to do. Go through each assignment and prioritize them. Get the ones that won't take you long out of the way first. If you have something due tomorrow, take care of that before you work ahead for the week.
Don't Binge On Coffee And Energy Drinks
Be careful with over-consuming coffee and energy drinks to keep your study pace up. I can't do anything without coffee, but make sure you're hydrating as well.
Take Study Breaks
Don't get so bogged down in your books and notes that you forget to come up for air. Study for 20-30 minutes at a time and take short breaks. Go grab a snack, take a walk or play Candy Crush for a minute. Heck, go take one of our quizzes!
I know it's not that easy to relax when you're stressed, but doing things like taking a hot bath or stretching can really calm your mind down.
Ask For Help
If you're feeling stressed to the point where you think you can't handle it, talk to a teacher or guidance counselor to see if there's any way to extend some deadlines or help you.
