I’ve talked a lot about my natural hair, the good and the bad things about it. But when it comes to styling it beyond its natural fro shape, I don’t really have the patience or the skill to do intricate twists or knots. Seriously, I’m the laziest natural hair girl on the planet. My attempts at braiding are a straight up joke. So what do I do when I want to add new life to my fro without a ton of maintenance? I rely on hair accessories to do the work for me.
From bows to beads and everything in between, here’s a roundup of 10 essential accessories that look amazing in natural hair.
Flower CrownSomewhat gratuitous photo of yours truly! I made this flower crown out of a bunch of fake flowers that I bought at Michael's and I wear it all the time. I'm pretty sure that people are probably getting sick of me wearing it but I really don't care. Anytime I want to liven up an outfit I throw on my flower crown. You don't have to make them, of course. You can buy them at plenty of stores or online.Source: My Instagram
Hair CombGive your hair a pop of color with an ornate hair comb. Make sure that it really stands out in your hair. I suggest going for some unique elements like fruit or sea creatures.Source: OlgaDesigns @ Etsy
Afro PickI don't even use afro picks but I want to buy this ASAP! It just looks really cute sticking out of your hair when there's a little statement piece--like the fist--attached to it. Show off your pride in style.Source: Amazon.com
Silk ScarfScarves are the most versatile of all hair accessories. You can tie them and wrap them in so many different ways. Seriously, check out YouTube for a ton of inspiration and tutorials.Source: MarieMag and CurlyNikki
HeadbandHeadbands don't have to be boring. Go for ones that really make a statement with beads, bows, feathers, etc. I really love headbands with some sort of chain, but be careful because they're prone to getting caught in your curls!Source: Forever 21
Fun Bobby PinsBobby pins usually have a purely functional purpose, but they can be fun too! Find bold trinkets and designs that'll make your bobby pin double as a funky hair accessory.Source: FrogPrincessDesigns @ Etsy
Hair BobblesOkay, some of you might be having some horrible flashbacks right now. I understand: Hair bobbles (or hair knockers or whatever you want to call them) were a painful part of many black girls' childhoods. I mean, they were borderline lethal! But they were still really cute so why not rock them in a slightly more mature style?Source: Afrique La Chic
Hair TurbanHair turbans are really big right now and they look great on every hair type, but it looks especially dope on natural hairstyles. Yep, I'm biased. Whether you have a fro or dreads or a blow out, you can rock this look.Source: StudioCulture104 @ Etsy
Colorful BowsVibrant cloth bows are cute and feminine but you can spice them up with some cool prints.Source: American Apparel
BeadsI know that we usually associate hair beads with little kids and Serena and Venus Williams in the '90s, but beads still look really lovely in braids and dreadlocks. Using wooden beads look a little more mature than plastic ones and makes it crystal clear that you're not trying to look like your six year old cousin.Source: Shutterstock
