This past week, I had to do something I absolutely hate doing: travel on an airplane. I’m really afraid of flying but I really love going on vacation, so I suck it up and I do it… but honestly, it’s the worst. This time was especially bad, since we had a very bumpy takeoff and I think the whole plane thought we were going to die (I wish I was exaggerating).
Anyway, people who aren’t afraid of flying never understand what it’s like to be afraid. You feel all sorts of anxiety and fear and it’s kind of a terrible thing to go through. So this is for those of you who are just as scared as me… I think you’ll be able to relate to this. And those of you who love airplanes? Maybe this will help you get what we’re freaking out about. Here’s what it’s really like to be on an airplane when you’re afraid of flying (explained in GIFs, of course).
You plan an awesome vacation. YAY! You’re SO EXCITED!
You have to fly there. Oh. Okay. Well… whatever. You’ll deal.
As the vacation gets closer, you get a little less excited and a little more anxious.
A few days before, all you can do is worry about the plane ride. WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?!
Your friends and family try to calm you down by reminding you that there are more car accidents than plane accidents and being in a plane is like being on a train. Except it’s not because you’re in the freakin’ air. They don’t calm you down.
The day before the flight, you don’t sleep at all.
Your friends who aren’t scared roll their eyes at your whining.
Your friends who ARE scared hug you but still don’t make you feel better.
The morning of, you don’t eat anything. You don’t even look forward to vacation. All you do is worry about the flight.
You get to the airport and see all of the huge jets. OH GOD WHY?!
You fidget in your seat the entire time you wait and you’re pretty sure everyone around you hates you.
You get onto the plane and you don’t speak to anyone.
The flight attendants do their little presentation and as much as you try to tune them out, you can’t help but picture what would happen if you really had to use those oxygen masks.
Takeoff time. You grip the arm rests so hard you might cut off circulation to your hand.
Okay. You’re in the air. Time to try to relax.
Nope. Not happening.
Do you want a snack? NO. How are you supposed to eat at a time like this?
The flight is basically never ending. How could a few hours seem so long? How are people sleeping?
There’s a little turbulence. This is it. This is the end. You know it.
Oh. It’s over. Time to breathe again.
When it’s finally time to descend, you once again hold on for dear life.
YOU MADE IT. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.
Okay, fine, it wasn’t that bad. (But it was)
Are you afraid of flying? Can you relate to this? How do you get over your fears? What’s the worst part about flying? Tell me in the comments!
