You know how you always hear that high school is the best four years of your life? Well, yeah, I’m sure for people it is. But it is definitely not the best four years of everyone’s lives, because, newsflash: high school is hard.
For example, I could not wait to get out of high school. I had a group of friends, but overall I wasn’t happy with my school. I didn’t really flourish and become my own person until college – those were the best four years of my life. Obviously, I made a lot of mistakes during high school… and, I mean, who doesn’t make mistakes during high school? This is a time in your life where you’re growing, learning stuff about yourself that you never knew and going through so many weird changes. Mistakes are bound to happen!
While I totally realize that not everyone’s high school experience is the same, I also know that a lot of people share similar experiences. And so, after being inspired by Buzzfeed’s list of mistakes, I decided to put together a list of mistakes you’ll make in high school. Check it out:
You'll Hook Up With Someone You Didn't Really Want To Hook Up WithSocial pressures are always high in high school, especially when it comes to hooking up. At some point, you'll probably fool around with someone you actually didn't want to fool around with. Maybe it's because you guys are at a party, maybe it's because you feel too guilty saying no or maybe (God forbid) you were forced into it. Whatever the reason, remember that you can always say no. You'll Have Sex Somewhere WeirdIf you're having sex in high school, you're almost definitely going to do it somewhere weird because it's hard to find privacy when you're young and your parents are watching your every move. Maybe it's a car in a shady parking lot, maybe it's the family living room couch, maybe it's at a party in your BFF's parent's bed... I don't know. It's inevitable. Source: ShutterStock
You'll Think Your Grades Are Going To Haunt You For The Rest Of Your LifeYes, grades are very important while you're in high school. And, yes, they're very important if you're trying to get into a good college. But the reality is that once you get a job, no one is going to care what your grades are. I'm not trying to encourage anyone to not do their homework - but do the best you can do and remember that life is about more than just grades. Source: ShutterStock
You Won't Hang With Your Siblings EnoughWhen you're in high school, your family usually gets pushed to the back burner because you're too busy hanging with your friends and/or significant other, doing school stuff and being a misunderstood teen. Don't forget about your siblings during that time! If you let them, they can be your best, most loyal friends for life. Source: ShutterStock
You'll Try Drinking Or A Drug Because Everyone Else IsOh, peer pressure. At some point in high school, you will most likely drink alcohol or try a drug simply because everyone else is doing, so it can't be that bad, right? Make your own choices. Source: ShutterStock
You'll Think You Know Everything And Will Never Listen To AnyoneI don't want to sound too patronizing here, but listen up: you don't know everything and not just because you're in high school. NO ONE knows everything, not even your 85-year-old grandma. Don't be as stubborn as I was in high school and be open to the opinions of others. Source: ShutterStock
You'll Fight With A Friend Over A DudeAt some point during high school, a guy will probably squirm his way between you and your best friend. Ugh. It's the worst. As much as I tell you to never pick a guy over your friend, you might not listen to me - and you'll have to learn that lesson the hard way. And yes, it is that hard. Source: ShutterStock
You Won't Help Someone Who's Being Bullied...Or you'll be a bully yourself. Bullying is and always has been an issue in every school, so I'm sure that at some point, you have seen or will see someone being bullied. You won't stand up for them every time, because it's hard to be the hero. But you should, because everyone deserves to be treated with kindness. Source: ShutterStock
You'll Fight With Your Parents Way Too MuchParents are annoying when you're a teen - I get it. Trust me, I get it. They give you too many rules and they try to control your life. But try not to fight with them too much... seriously. Your parents love you and they want the best for you. They really are only trying to help. Sometimes they do the wrong thing, but in the end, they're just doing their best. Source: ShutterStock
You'll Wear Something Extremely EmbarrassingWhen I was a freshman, I thought I was an extra in a Mary-Kate and Ashley movie and I constantly mimicked their wacked out hairstyles and outfit choices. Now I look back on pictures and cringe. But hey, at least this mistake is fun! Source: ShutterStock
You'll Ditch A Friend For Other FriendsSometimes we go through stages with our friends where we hang out with one friend a lot one month and then another friend a lot the next. At some point during your high school life, you will make a new friend who will replace an old friend. This is sad, because you'll regret it later when you miss that old friend and they're too hurt to forgive you. Source: ShutterStock
You Won't Ask Questions In Class Because You're Too EmbarrassedParticipating in class can be really embarrassing in high school! If you're too eager, people are going to make fun of you. If you're too quiet and shy, people are going to make fun of you. Whether you have the right or wrong answer, you'll either be called know-it-all or stupid. You can't win! So I get it. But forget about those people and raise your hand if you know the answer. Impress your teacher! Source: ShutterStock
You'll Stress Too Much Over Hooking UpWhether you're worried about losing your virginity or having your first kiss, you will stress over hooking up WAY too much. Seriously girls, it's not that big of a deal if you go through high school without kissing or having sex. I promise! On the flip side, you also shouldn't feel bad about having a lot of sex or doing a lot of kissing. Source: ShutterStock
You'll Date Someone Who You'll Think You'll Be With ForeverWhen I was in high school, I dated a dude I was SURE I was going to marry. Like, we had the whole thing planned out. I couldn't imagine ever being with anyone else. Obviously, it didn't work out. Don't waste your high school years only focusing on ONE person. If you guys really do stay together forever, you'll have your whole lives to focus on each other. If not? You'll regret everything you missed out on. Source: ShutterStock
You'll Let Someone Take Advantage Of You Simply Because They're An Authority FigureTeachers, coaches, principles, your boss, even your parents, sometimes assume that they can do and say whatever they want to high school students simply because they're older and in charge. And students think these authority figures can get away with anything. But guess what? They can't. If you feel like someone is taking advantage of you, speak up! Find someone who will listen and treat you with respect, because you deserve that. Source: ShutterStock
You Won't Join Enough After-School ActivitiesWhen I was in high school, my mom forced me to join all of these after-school activities that I was positive were going to be a total waste of time that would better be spent gossiping with my best friend. Looking back, I'm glad she did that. I met people I wouldn't have otherwise met and got some pretty great experiences. Plus, it looks great on your college application. Source: ShutterStock
You'll Care Too Much About What Others Think Of YouUnless you're 100 percent secure and confident in yourself, you will spend a lot of high school worrying about what your peers think of you and everything you do. Trust me, once you realize that it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, you'll be so much happier. Source: ShutterStock
You Won't Save Any Money EverWho wants to save money in high school? It's such an adult thing to do! But if you put away a little money each week, you'll thank yourself later, when you're slammed with work in college and can't imagine adding a part-time job to your workload. Trust me. You Won't Let A Guy Know You Have A Crush On HimYou'll develop a hopeless crush on at least one guy and you'll be way too afraid to ever make the first move or let him know how you feel. I get it - being vulnerable is hard. It can also be totally worth it. Be strong, girl! Source: ShutterStock
You'll Think You Know Yourself 100% But You'll ChangeAgain, I don't want to sound too patronizing here, but seriously - you're going to change. When I was a senior in high school, I was all like, "Wow, I've grown so much. This is the person I am!" Then when I was a senior in college, I was like, "Wow, I was SUCH a baby in high school. I've changed SO much! THIS is who I am." Then today, four years later, I'm like, "Wow, who was I in college? I'm so different today." Get it? Source: ShutterStock
Did you make any of these mistakes in high school? If you’re still in high school, have you done any of these things? Do you agree or disagree with this list? Tell me in the comments!
