Before I get into this, let me just make this clear: I love being in a relationship and I love my boyfriend. He makes me super happy and I can’t imagine being with anyone else. That being said, there are downsides to being in a relationship, just like there are downsides to anything in life. I would never prance around saying being in a relationship is perfect all the time – it’s not and that is actually something you need to accept in order to ever make a relationship work. 

So, what are some things that suck about being in a relationship? I’ll tell you. The next time you’re complaining about how single you are, think about these things and keep in mind that having a boyfriend or girlfriend is not the solution to everything.

You don’t get any first kisses or super sweet first date moments. Because you guys had those already.

Going out with your single friends can be awkward, especially when they’re all flirting with someone and you’re just standing there, pretending to text your BF.

Little fights happen a lot more often. And usually they make NO sense but go on for hours.

Dates can get boring… if you even go on dates. When you’ve been in a relationship for a while, it’s super easy to get into a movies/cuddle routine.

You can’t be totally selfish. You’re in a relationship! You can’t only think about yourself. You have someone else’s feelings to worry about also.

Jealousy happens and it sucks. It sucks.

You miss out on friend time. Once you have a boyfriend, it’s just a fact that you don’t have as much time for your friends anymore. FOMO, anyone?

You spend more money. You have to buy someone elaborate gifts for holidays, birthdays and anniversaries. Oof.

You suddenly have to deal with someone else’s family. You know those annoying family obligations you have? Now you have to go to his or hers also. Womp womp.
