Hi Shallon,

My boyfriend says he loves to go down on me but… I just don’t believe him. It feels amazing but I spend the whole time worried that I smell gross, look gross, taste gross–AM gross in general. He keeps reassuring me but I just can’t imagine that it’s not kind of icky. I know you’ll tell me the truth: is it super nasty for guys to give us oral?

Dear Scent-sational Sarah,

In a word: NO. It’s not gross. Not at all. Think about it: if going down on a girl was SO INCREDIBLY AWFUL, it wouldn’t have stayed around for hundreds of years. Dudes would have just plain stopped doing it. I polled nearly every one of my guy friends to get their honest, no holds barred opinions, here’s what they said:

“Smells? Nah, no not at all. I mean once, in college when my girlfriend had just gotten back from volleyball practice, yeah, that wasn’t the best, but every other time I’ve gone down on a girl, it wasn’t anything less than awesome.” – Jackson

“It tastes, like, warm and tangy if that makes sense. I dunno how to describe it but it’s definitely good! If a guy doesn’t like doing it, we all secretly thing he’s really weird, because it’s awesome.” – Reid

“Girls may think they smell weird but to guys, it’s like this aphrodisiac that only we can smell. You know how there are ringtones that adults can’t hear? It’s like that I guess but for guys. And vaginas.” – Kyle

I also talked to my bisexual friend, a girl, who’s gone down on both guys and girls and she had a very interesting perspective.

“I always thought it was SUPER gross to go down on a girl and I’d always feel guilty when anyone did it to me… until I did it to someone else. Ummm it’s SO much easier and nicer than giving a blow job!” she gushed.

“Even physically, the way your head is angled and your body positioned is way more comfortable than giving a BJ. I could go down on a girl for hours, it’s great. Now, having done it, I really see why guys love it. To know you’re giving someone pleasure is even better than getting it yourself!”

So ladies, this is the overall message: it’s not gross. It’s not stinky, it’s not some vile sewer-like area that boys are forever traumatized after visiting. It’s great! And very much not something we should feel guilty about. And if you have a guy who makes you feel that way, the problem is HIM, not your lady bits!
