10 Sad Movies That Will Make You Cry – And Help You Get Over A Breakup

Going through a breakup is super difficult and one thing that has personally always made me feel better is watching movies. It’s two hours of paying attention to lives that aren’t yours (even though they’re fake) and it’s great. Whenever I give advice on how to get over a breakup, I always include “watch funny movies.” But apparently, I’m wrong.

A new study says that listening to sad music and watching sad movies that make you cry can actually help you get over a breakup. The study says that “people experiencing relationship problems are more likely to prefer experiences that reflect their negative mood.”

Honestly, this doesn’t really make a ton of sense to me. Wouldn’t crying over a movie only make you feel miserable? According to the study results, the sad movies actually sort of make you feel less lonely because you can relate more. I guess that sort of makes sense?

Anyway, I put together a list of some of the saddest movies ever that you can watch the next time you’re dealing with a breakup. Get a serious crying sesh in with these bad boys. Have a few boxes of tissues handy… seriously. I can’t make it through any of these without sobbing. PS: There are probably some spoilers here, so be careful if you haven’t seen these all yet!

A Walk To Remember

Any more where anyone dies is already sad enough. Add in an admittedly sappy love story and a seriously depressing song and you’ve got yourself a certified sob fest.

Like Crazy

Although nothing seriously big happens in this movie, it’s depressing because I think it’s something we can all relate to – falling madly in love during bad circumstances and then struggling to make things work even though it’s kind of obvious that they won’t. 🙁

The Great Gatsby

I cried like a baby at the end of the book and when I saw the new movie in theaters, I literally cried throughout the whole thing. Knowing what happens to Jay Gatsby only to see him so full of hope… it’s literally heartbreaking.

The Notebook

Obviously no sad movie list is complete without a mention of The Notebook. I know dudes who cried more than I did during this movie and that’s really saying something.

Pearl Harbor

Lies! Lies! Lies! I can’t even think about this movie. Or talk about it.

The Vow

The Vow is a very sad reminder that horrible things can happen in an instant and change our lives forever. So sad.

My Girl

Watching this movie as a kid literally traumatized me. I mean, kids dying. How can you not be hysterical over it?!

Bridge To Terabithia

This book made me cry like a baby, so then obviously I saw the movie only to cry even more. I literally sobbed in public. Like I said, kids dying. Man, it gets me every time.

500 Days Of Summer

I guess you can argue that this movie isn’t sad since it has a happy ending, but… it’s sad. Who hasn’t been in the same position as Tom at some point of their lives? Hopelessly in love with someone who doesn’t care about you the same way you care about them. Sigh.

Which of these movies is your favorite? Have you seen all of them? Which made you cry the most? What do you watch when dealing with a breakup? Tell me in the comments.

“Fried Green Tomatoes” is the one that always makes me cry. I’ve seen it a million times and I still cry towards the end. While the movie never directly says Idgie and Ruth have something romantic going, it’s pretty obvious, and if you read the book, it DOES say they fall in love. The death scene in the movie is also a lot more intense than in the book. I love that movie, though, even if it does have a sad ending.

Oh my god, yes. I LOVE that movie. It made me cry so many times, especially at the beginning and during the KKK scene. Also at the end, and in the middle. That whole movie made me cry 🙂

I feel that reading The Notebook before watching the movie almost ruined it for me. I knew what was going to happen in the end, so the movie just wasnt sad for me. Plus the two endings were compeltely different, which kind of ruined it for me. idk, not one of my favorites, but the young love story is cute 🙂
