Summertime is upon us, which means hanging out in the sun, hitting up the local pool and catching up on television (and books, but especially television). Oh, I guess there is also the little issue of making money. With a wide open summer, filling it with the opportunity to make money certainly is appealing.
That said, getting a summer job isn’t always as easy as the movies make it out to be. Whether your summer job is your first job or yet another job in the endless quest toward riches, summer jobs are certainly something to experience.
You may recall that GIF Girl has a hard time dealing with being broke, so she’s decided to get a summer job. Will she be successful in her search? Only one way to find out!
I’ve decided to get a summer job this year because it seems like the best idea ever. I’m ready to make tons of money.
Bonus: according to movies, I’ll meet someone cool through my summer job and we’ll definitely date and be super in love. Right?
A.K.A. Best. Summer. Plans. Ever.
So what do I want to do? What about work at a restaurant? No, I would have no patience for bad tippers.
Working at the community pool?
How about an outdoor job, like landscaping or at a park? Ugh no, it’ll be way too hot.
I come to my last resort: babysitting. Gah, remember how babysitting went last time? Too stressful. Cross that possibility off the list.
Huh. This isn’t turning out to be so easy. Maybe I’ll just pick something at random and hope for the best.
Unfortunately, it seems that after all that, nobody is willing to hire anyone – awesome me included.
Yet my friends don’t seem cool about starting a new business with me just for the summer.
Fine, but that means they can kiss getting cool birthday gifts goodbye since I will have no money.
I fill out every form imaginable at every place imaginable. Then I wait. And wait. And wait. Going to be a thrilling summer, yeah?
And then one day, just before school ends, I FINALLY GOT A JOB! Money-making summer here I come.
Wait… if I am working every day this summer, then I am probably going to have to miss out on fun things, like spending evenings sparkler dancing Katy Perry-style.
Uh oh. Is summer money > summer fun? I guess I was bound to have to choose one or the other. We’ll just have to see.

I had my first job last summer, which was the summer right before college. I was a cashier at a fast food restaurant and I actually really liked it. The customers were often terrible, but my managers and coworkers were great and we were kind of a little family.
This summer I’m working as a technician for a summer stock theatre. I’m really not looking forward to being 4 hours away from home for three months since I’ve been away at school all year, but it’s my intended career and I need stuff for my resume.
This is the second summer that I am working for the parks and recreation department in my city. I get to work with kids all summer and be outside doing activities and playing games with them. The great bonus? I work Monday through Friday from 8-4. My nights are always free for hanging out with friends or coworkers and my weekends are all about what I want to do. I couldn’t ask for a better job. I love getting to be around the kids and my boss and coworkers are totally awesome. Somehow I ended up with the best of both worlds.
