Can Wearing Fake Eyelashes Give You A Serious Infection?

One of the most popular beauty trends out there has to be wearing fake eyelashes. Falsies are a simple way to add drama and glamour to your whole makeup look that don’t involve trying out some new, complicated eye tutorial that you found on Pinterest. In the last few years, they’ve become super popular. Girls aren’t only wearing them for special occasions, like prom, but they’re also using them for everyday looks. And if you thought all celebs were blessed with super long, lush eyelashes (I’m looking at you Kim Kardashian and Zooey Deschanel), you’d be very wrong. Fake eyelashes are a staple in their makeup bags.

But… are fake eyelashes actually dangerous? Can wearing fake eyelashes give you a pretty serious infection? As it turns out, yup – fake eyelashes can be dangerous. Yes, it’s true: first your lipstick might poison you,  now your fake eyelashes might be messing with your eyes. Ugh, makeup, get it together.

According to doctors, you can actually be allergic to fake eyelashes – or, not the actual eyelashes themselves, but the glue you use to put them on and the solvent used to take them off. A lot of people have reported being allergic to the formaldehyde in the glue. This allergy can result in infections, swelling, irritation and even ulceration.

Not only that, but applying false eyelashes can turn into a viscous cycle. You might only want to use them once in a while to make your lashes look longer, but once you wear them, they can tear your real eyelashes out and make your real lashes look thinner. Once your lashes start looking thinner, you start wearing more falsies. And wearing more fake eyelashes only makes the situation even worse.

While the side effects of this allergy may not seem super serious, keep in mind that allergic reactions aren’t always the same for everyone – if you have a reaction, it could end up being a lot worse. Also, it’s important to remember that your eye area is really sensitive. Doesn’t putting sticky glue there sound kind of alarming?

Basically, fake eyelashes aren’t always really dangerous – it’s not like putting them on means you’re automatically going to get a reaction. Some people aren’t affected by them at all. But the thing is, you might have this allergy and not even know it. And is your eye really the place you want to have an allergic reaction?

If you love yourself a good set of falsies and can’t imagine going without them, keep an eye on the ingredients in both the glue and the solvent used to remove them. If you know that you have an allergy to anything, avoid that product and try to find one that doesn’t have those ingredients. Can’t use fake eyelashes at all? There are some seriously great mascaras out there – give them a try!
