I’m Always Getting Bacteria Infections That Make Me Smell Down There – How Can I Stop Them?

Ugh, bacterial infections down there. How annoying! Not only can they be a little itchy and uncomfortable, but they also make you smell down there… and I don’t think that’s anyone’s favorite thing. If you feel like you are constantly getting bacterial infections down there that are giving off a funky odor, here is some advice on how to stop it from happening:

ChickRx expert Dr. Kathy McMahon, Clinical Psychologist, Diplomate of Sex Therpay, says:

Are you sure you keep getting bacterial infections like bacterial vaginosis? Don’t self-diagnose and assume that you know what’s happening down there. If you get these infections repeatedly, go see a doctor and have a culture done. Your doctor is the only one who can tell you for sure what’s really going on.

If you’re prone to bacterial infections, there are a few things you can do to try to prevent them. Think about how often you are letting your genitals “air out.” That basically means how often you’re going commando. You don’t have to start forgoing underwear every time you go out – sleeping without panties at night gives you eight full hours of “air time.” Be sure you wear cotton panties. Synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon can cause infections. Also, thongs are bad news – the constant rubbing leads to infections.

If you can, let your genitals “get some sun” through a window. It won’t cure the infection and I know it sounds funny, but the sun works wonders on a lot of things. On another note, if you take a lot of baths, maybe cut down on those.

You should also be making sure your vaginal area is always clean. Don’t douche – that could actually cause an infection. Instead, just carefully wash the area on a daily basis with warm water and a little bit of bar soap. Stay clean after sex as well. Make sure you’re going to the bathroom after intercourse and washing your vagina, especially if you’re having sex without a condom.

Lastly, are you on any medications? If you are, check them out. Sometimes certain meds can cause an imbalance to your whole system and result in something like a bacterial or yeast infection. But most importantly, see your doctor and get a culture. That’s the best way to figure out what’s going on.
