I want you to take a minute and think about your makeup bag. Now, think about each item and when you bought it. Chances are, some of those products have made happy little homes in your bag for a long time.
Daily Mail surveyed a group of women and found that 78% didn’t know makeup had a shelf life. You guys, that is not good! And out of the 22% who knew products expire, 82% keep using them after the expiration date. I am cringing as I type this.
Many of the women explained that they can’t afford to replace products that expire before they’ve used them up, which I totally get because makeup can be really expensive. But products have a shelf life for a reason! I mean, you wouldn’t drink spoiled milk, right? Your makeup can house tons of bacteria, especially eye products, which can lead to increased acne and actual infections.
It’s so important to make sure that you’re getting rid of old products and keeping your makeup clean. Click through below to find out when you should be replacing your makeup:
Blush And Bronzers
Powders will last for 2 years. Creams or liquids will last up to 1 year.
Liquid Foundation
6-12 months, but regularly check your foundation. If it starts to smell weird, it's time to toss it.
Mascara
3 months, that's it! If there is one thing you MUST replace on the reg, it's mascara. Expired mascara can cause serious infections to your eyes. Also, do not under any circumstances share your mascara with anyone!
Powdered Foundation
Powdered foundation typically holds up longer than its liquid counterpart at 2 years. Avoid using the sponge that comes with it though. Instead, use a brush that you clean regularly.
Lipstick
Tube lipstick will last for about 2 years. Glosses and lip colors with a wand applicator will last for 6-12 months, but if it smells or looks off, throw it out.
Concealer
With a wand applicator, 6 months. Potted or stick concealers will last for a year.
Eyeshadow
Eyeshadows will last for around 2 years, but make sure you clean your brushes frequently to avoid contaminating them. Expired eyeshadow will crack and flake.
Eyeliner
Pencil eyeliner that you sharpen regularly will last you about a year, provided you don't use it all up. Liquid or potted liners will last about 3 months as it carries the same dangers as expired mascara.
