It’s illegal to have sex in public … but that doesn’t stop people. One in four people have had sex in public! Exhibitionism is a lot more prevalent that people realize, but it doesn’t always manifest itself into people full-out having sex in public places. Sometimes it’s a bit more subtle than that.

Some exhibitionists just like to have really, really loud sex–on purpose. What’s the appeal of sex in public–or having such loud sex that people totally know what you’re doing, even if they can’t see it? Some people reported that they like the thrill it gives them, which others actually said they sort of want to be caught. Say what?!

Here’s where getting caught having sex gets weird–the people who do get caught usually get caught by a family member. Do you really want your older brother or mom having that image in their heads?!

Here’s what somewhat stinks about exhibitionism: About half of self-professed exhibitionists say that their partners actually don’t share their penchant for public sex. That said, is having sex in public (or just having really loud sex in a place with thin walls) a good idea? It’s actually not the worst, according to experts–just be smart about it.

“As long as you’re not putting yourself in any bad situations, there’s nothing wrong with a bit of exhibitionism,” researchers explained. “Just ensure your partner feels the same and you’re not doing anything illegal, as the thrill you get from being ‘caught’ may not outweigh the repercussions!” You hear that, girls? Don’t go getting arrested. If anything, especially with sex, it’s better to be safe than sorry–so you may just have to have sex in public in your own head and pretend your boyfriend’s room is in a football field somewhere. Because as long as you don’t live on your own, there’s a big chance the thrill of maybe getting caught will come true anyway!
