How To Skip Laundry And Get Away With It

I don’t mind doing laundry, really. Folding is the real trouble. The actual act of putting things in the washer and dryer doesn’t bother me. BUT I don’t have a washer or dryer here in New York and doing laundry is expensive, which means there are some things that I will wear a few times before washing them.

This is a totally acceptable practice, even justified by my mom who does an ungodly amount of laundry every week. There’s a big difference between dirty and worn! And some things, like skinny jeans that I can’t fit into if they shrink up, shouldn’t be washed frequently. And there’s nothing a little Febreze can’t take care of!

Let’s go through some things that you don’t have to wash after one wear.

Jeans

Unless I spill something on my jeans, I typically wear them at least five times before throwing them in the wash. Denim is designed to adapt to your body and actually shouldn't be washed often according to Levi Strauss & Co. employees.

Button Downs

Button down shirts and blouses can usually be worn at least twice before washing. If you're wearing it over another shirt, you can go even longer. I have a chambray button down that I wear over other shirts all the time so I go about four or five wears with that one.

Chunky Cardigans

With chunky cardigans or other outerwear-type sweaters, you can go at least five wears. If it's a thinner blend like cotton or cashmere, you can probably get three out of it.

Bras

You probably think I'm crazy, but your bras are not meant to be washed every day. That's how they lose their shape! You can wear a bra at least four or five times before washing. Make sure you handwash or run through the delicate cycle and air dry!

Blazers, Jackets Or Other Outerwear

Outerwear can go at least seven wears without washing. I even go longer with jackets. Sweatshirts and fleeces should be washed at least every five wears.

Dresses

A lot of dresses have to be dry cleaned, which can be really pricey so you want to get the most out of each wear! Most dresses can be worn two or three times before washing.

Skirts

Skirts are a happy medium between jeans and dresses. I usually get at least three wears out of skirts.

Regular Sweaters

Regular sweaters can be worn three or four times. If they're made out of a thicker material like wool, you can get away with five wears.

Throw Clothes In The Dryer

If you have something that's not quite ready to wash, but needs to be freshened up, spray it with some Febreze or a wrinkle releaser and toss it in the dryer for 15-20 minutes. It will smell super clean, and you'll be able to get another day out of it.

Steam It

I rely heavily on my handheld steamer. Steaming helps remove wrinkles and releases scents from the fabric. Quickly go over a shirt or dress with a steamer to bring it back to life.
