Not going to sugarcoat this: The Boston situation right now is horrifying, dangerous and confusing, and I don’t blame you one bit if you choose to avoid the news for a while, even if only because there’s so little actual information available. There are a lot of conflicting reports out there and a lot of generally irresponsible reporting, because a lot of outlets feel like they have to tell us something, so they just tell us anything: “Hey, that guy walked his dog two towns over from where these guys lived. Let’s interview him on air!” It’s just the nature of the beast.

That said, I’m going to go through everything that we do know for sure. It’s sometimes comforting to bury our heads in the sand, but for some of us, keeping a close eye on events is a way to feel like we’re maintaining some semblance of control amid the chaos around us. Both reactions–as well as any fear, doubt, anxiety or sadness you’re feeling right now–are totally valid, so don’t feel like whatever yours happens to be is wrong.

That said, here goes.

UPDATE: As of 8:45 PM, the Boston police can confirm that they have Dzhokhar A. Tsarnev alive and in custody. The Boston Police department tweets: “CAPTURED!!! The hunt is over. The search is done. The terror is over. And justice has won. Suspect in custody.”

- As you probably know, there were two bombings at the Boston Marathon on Monday, April 15.

- Last night (Thursday, April 17), the FBI released images of two suspects in the bombings as well as some security camera footage of the two men at the scene. Later that night, the same two suspects robbed a 7-Eleven. Their names are Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev and Tamerlan Tsarnaev. They are brothers from Chechnya, which is part of Russia.

- A little while later, there was a shooting at the MIT campus, killing a campus police officer named Sean A. Collier.

- Not far from the campus, the duo were suspected of carjacking a Mercedes SUV. The driver was unharmed. The cops chased the SUV and the suspects into Watertown, Massachusetts.

- The Tsarnaev brothers flung explosives from the SUV towards the police who were on their tail. Everyone in the community was advised to stay in their homes.

- The cops and suspects had a shootout within the small town’s streets. Tamerlan was taken into custody but died of his gunshot wounds before he could be taken to justice. (Though, it could be argued, he already was.)

- The second suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, is still at large, uninjured and extremely dangerous.

- Watertown, Massachusetts was put under lockdown. Public transportation was shut down and instead repurposed to shuttle in more SWAT team members to the community. The authorities are going door to door to find Tsarnaev.

- Boston residents are being urged to stay indoors and not leave their homes.

We’re going to be updating this post as we receive up to date, confirmed information on the case. If you’re looking for interviews with the Tsarnaev brothers’ uncle’s neighbor’s best friend’s cousin, you may want to seek it elsewhere. Or better yet, don’t seek it at all–because it’s not helping anything.
