I get the self-depricating humor thing. Remember that episode of Full House when Stephanie gets glasses and makes fun of herself before the other kids can? Well, that wasn’t good advice. Uncle Joey tells Stephanie that he used to make fun of himself when he was a kid too, but in reality anyone who makes fun of her doesn’t deserve her attention.
Rebel is amazing, but why does there have to be a focus on her weight? She’s not funny because of her size, she’s funny because she’s funny. Rebel has been this breath of fresh air in comedy because she truly is hilarious, but the continuous fat jokes during the MTV Movie Awards weren’t funny.
If anyone else were commenting about her weight, people would be flipping out just like they did when that movie critic slammed Melissa McCarthy for her appearance in Identity Thief. And yet, Rebel took a dig at herself and Melissa McCarthy by introducing her as “larger” woman, which was totally unnecessary.

Does it make the fat jokes okay since Rebel was making them about herself?
Truthfully, no it doesn’t. Body-shaming is still body-shaming even if it’s to yourself. Making fun of yourself doesn’t make things better for you. Trust me, I’m guilty of self-deprication too. I would always make fun of myself when I was younger whether it was for my nose or my crazy hair or my ears that I eventually grew into. It didn’t make the insecurities any easier to deal with. It actually made them worse because I started to believe my own jokes. And pointing out my so-called flaws made other people point them out more as well.
Rebel has so much more to offer than fat jokes about herself. And I wonder how it affects people struggling with accepting their bodies to hear Rebel make fun of her weight.
Was Rebel pulling a Stephanie Tanner and making fun of herself before anyone else could? Maybe. But is it necessary? No. Rebel continues to prove that she is insanely talented and wonderful, and I think everyone else recognizes that. I just wish she would too.

Just because you think it’s shaming herself doesn’t mean she does….
I make short and skinny jokes all the time and I feel fucking awesome afterwards same thing with my friend who is much bigger than me makes jokes about herself as well.
In my opinion making jokes about yourself (outer and inner) is part of acceptance, you brought up full house, but remember when Michelle started kindergarten? Or when Stephanie’s nose broke? Or when DJ had that zit before her play? How about when Michelle made a goal in the wrong net?
They laughed about it! Based on what you’re saying it’s bad to laugh at yourself because then you’re making fun of yourself, let it go and let Rebel do what she wants as long as she’s happy!
I have to agree with Rose; just because she makes jokes about her body doesn’t mean she’s body-shaming herself. I think it’s just a humor technique like any other; it makes people laugh and it also shows that she’s aware of her physical appearance and isn’t afraid to laugh/comment on it. It also doesn’t mean that she doesn’t love herself because in fact, it takes a lot of self-confidence to make jokes about your own flaws in front of millions of telespectators!
It just proves how funny and strong she is. I too make jokes about my skinny-self but let me tell you; you have to be secure and mature to have such self-criticism! I don’t think anyone will have the guts to make jokes about her body since it’s clear she owns it through her jokes. And she’s not afraid to show it off!
