Shaving my legs is kind of a time waster for me. I feel like even when I take my time to try and get smooth legs, as soon as I leave the house with my shorts on, I spot all of the places that I missed. I’ve sort of given up on caring about keeping my legs shaved all the time (seriously, who cares if you do or don’t?!).
Well, according to a new poll, the average woman spends 72 days out of their life shaving their legs. I’m not sure if I reach that since as I just mentioned, my leg shaving is pretty lax, but even still, I can only imagine how much time I spend doing things that I kind of hate.
I’ve gone ahead and done what I’m calling “Meg math,” which involves a lot of estimation to get a sense of just how many minutes I’m racking up during my life doing those things that annoy me. Here are ten things I consider big time wasters.
Watching TV… commercials:
About 20 minutes per hour x 2 hours a day x 7 days x 52 weeks = 14,560 minutes each year.
Waiting for my friend who is always late:
About 30 minutes each week x 52 weeks = 1,560 minutes each year.
Trying on clothes that I don’t even end up buying:
About 60 minutes per month x 12 months = 720 minutes each year.
Standing in line to return things that I do buy at the mall:
We’ll say about 30 minutes per month x 12 months = 360 minutes each year.
Taking off my nail polish:
10 minutes per week x 52 weeks = 520 minutes each year.
Shampooing/conditioning my hair:
10 minutes per day x 3 days per week (don’t judge) x 52 weeks in a year = 1,560 minutes each year.
Washing the dinner I’ve burned (always) off of dishes:
About 15 minutes per day x 7 days x 52 weeks = 5,460 minutes each year.
Dealing with my contact lenses (insertion, removal, general fixing):
About 20 minutes each week x 52 weeks = 1,040 minutes each year.
Listening to my mom talk about people I do not know at all:
About 10 minutes per day x 7 days x 52 weeks = 3,640 minutes each year.
Cleaning my room:
Well, considering it’s 0 minutes per day and you know the old math rule that anything multiplied by zero is zero, then yeah, zero minutes. Hey, I have to draw the line somewhere.
Math time! Side note: Reading this totally should be extra credit for your math homework.
Let’s add up the minutes of time wasted each year for the grand total: 14,560 + 1,560 + 720 + 520 + 360 + 1,560 + 5,460 + 1,040 + 3,640 + 0 = 29,420
So I checked and the average lifespan of a female woman in the U.S. is about 80, so let’s multiply 29,420 by 80 and we get… 2,353,000 minutes of all this junk in my lifetime.
And thanks to Rent, I happen to know that there are five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes in one year, so let’s divide to see what that translates to in years.
Drum roll… I will spend just about 4 years and 9 months doing all those things that I hate. Perhaps I’ll just stop doing all of them and not start again until I turn about 75? Unlikely, but there you have it.

I live about 30 min away from my school and 45 min away from any decent mall in the city. I HATE commuting. Not only is it expensive but it takes so much time away from my day where I could be doing other things. Plus since I live so far I’m always worrying if I can catch a ride home or not. It sucks.
