Your Complete Guide To Birth Control Options

Sponge

The sponge is a plastic foam device containing spermicide that is inserted into the vagina before sex. It can be inserted up to 24 hours before having sex and must be left in at least 6 hours after.

9 out of 100 women per year who use it correctly get pregnant. Women who have already had a child have a higher risk of getting pregnant (20 out of 100 per year). The sponge does not protect against STDs so you must wear a condom.

The sponge also carries a risk of toxic shock syndrome when left in too long and can cause irritation and UTIs.
