Karen Braithwaite seems like a pretty awesome mom – and now you can help be a part of her awesomeness. Here’s the deal: recently, her soon-to-be 5-year-old daughter Georgia asked for a Barbie birthday party.

So Karen set out to get decorations for Georgia’s party and found that the birthday party supplies offered by Mattel almost entirely featured a blonde and blue-eyed Barbie. There were barely any decorations that featured Barbies who looked like her African-American daughter or other girls of color.

She’s put together a Change.org petition to Mattel, writing: “Young girls of color need positive images of themselves reflected back to them in popular culture, the media, and their daily lives. Mattel already offers a wide selection of dolls of different races and ethnicities–which simply begs the question: Why not give young girls of color the option of seeing and celebrating that same diversity when it comes to celebrating themselves?”

I don’t have to tell you that blonde hair and blue-eyed is only what a very specific portion of the population looks like. Making changes to have more diverse party supplies would surely mean a lot to many girls like Georgia, and also would reinforce the fact that diversity is the norm. It should be something that is celebrated and readily shown in all areas of life, including everyday things like birthday party decorations.

Watch the cute video that Karen put together, and if you’re interested, you can head over to Change.org to sign the petition. Also, Happy Birthday Georgia!

Will you sign this petition? Have you ever noticed a lack of diversity among products? What did you do? Tell us in the comments!

Barbie definitely should be more diverse. Not just African-Americans, but for other ethnicities as well.
