Who is having sex? If you watch TV or movies or read anything, it makes it sound like all teens are having sex like crazy, but guess what? In terms of young teens, most of then are not having sex.

A new study says that fewer than 10 percent of girls have had sex by the age of 14, which may seem a lot different from the horror stories you hear about so often. And that number has been steady and low for the past 50 years.

Of course, as teens get older, that number rises: 33 percent of teens have had sex by age 16, 48 percent by age 17, and up to 71 percent by 19.

Some awesome news about who is having sex? Responsible people are. About 80 percent of 16-year-olds who were sexually active reported using some form of contraception–often more than one. Smart! And even better? That number jumped to 95 percent for 17-year-olds. (It appears that older can be a lot wiser in terms of safe sex.)

Though most 14-year-olds are not having sex, there is something scary about the ones who are: they’re not being safe. The report suggests that the earlier you start having sex to begin with, the later you actually start having safe sex. This can be for any number of reasons: Inexperience, a lack of sex education–but it’s pretty risky. We’re all for having a consensual good time (as long as you’re both able to engage in sex legally and are down with it), but safe sex is the best sex. You can’t enjoy yourself if you’re freaking about your period being late!

Who is having sex most often of people you know? Do you think young teens not having sex is a good or bad thing? Did you use protection when you first started having sex? Tell us in the comments!
