Sexist Nail Polish Names: Do You Have A Misogynist Manicure?!

Misogynist Sexist Nail Polish Names Manicures

Are misogynist or sexist nail polish names really all we have to worry about? | Source: ShutterStock

Because there are some people in the world without enough to worry about, there’s some hullabaloo over sexist or misogynist nail polish names. Apparently some of your manicures are setting women back. Right.

Someone named Glennis McCarthy is mad about certain nail polish names, even though most of us don’t even look at the names on nail polish–we just look at the color and decide whether or not we want purple glitter on our hands (which, in my case, is always “yes”).

“[The names] paint women into the intersection of awful and objectified, or just makes me feel plain ick,” Glennis griped. The ones Glennis hated most? ‘Jizz‘ by Bleach Black, ‘Before He Cheats‘ by Deborah Lippmann, ‘Gold Digger‘ by SpaRitual and ‘Sugar Daddy‘ by Essie are were all considered offensive and terrible.

There are plenty of actual threats to women and to feminism that have nothing to do with your mani, so the fact that this is at the forefront of anyone’s mind is sort of sad. Especially when you consider how stupid a lot of this really is.

Is “Iris I Was Thinner” lame and reaching? Yes, especially in a culture where body image is already bad enough. (Couldn’t they have used “Richer” or something?) But the rest of these are so dumb.

It appears that Glennis isn’t aware that “Before He Cheats” was named after a relatively empowering breakup song by Carrie Underwood, that “Gold Digger” was likely inspired by Kanye West–or is merely a play on words. If we want to worry about misogynist, sexist behavior, why don’t we look at things like rape or Rush Limbaugh?

But not gonna lie you guys, even I can’t really defend “Jizz.” Yecch.

Do you think these nail polish names are sexist? Do you think misogynist nail polish names are really damaging to women? What’s your go-to manicure color? Do you even pay any mind to nail polish names when you’re getting a manicure? Tell us in the comments!

These commercials actually are super sexist!
