Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart recently reunited after going on a break from their relationship while he was in Australia–same with Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth. And reports are suggesting that both couples are closer now than ever. Can going on a break actually help your relationship?

That depends.

If you’re going on a break because you both want to see other people, that’s a bad sign–and a sign that you should probably just break up, because it’s always confusing and someone always ends up getting hurt. (Think about Justin Bieber hitting on Barbara Palvin while he and Selena Gomez were on their first big break–not good, and it doesn’t bode well for the relationship at all!)

But if you’re taking a break after a series of drama–cheating in R-Pattz and K-Stew’s case, and rumors of trouble in Miley and Liam’s–it may be a smart move as long as you’re both clear that you’re still not seeing other people and just need a bit of time apart. Here’s why: You may be addicted to that drama, and you may be trying to salvage a relationship just because you’re too comfortable with one another to let go and find someone better for each of you.

Going on a break and getting away from one another while remaining committed–think just spending a weekend or two away from one another–can help you gain some clarity: Do I miss this person or do I miss not being alone? Do I miss this person or do I miss attention and excitement?

Spending time alone with your own thoughts can give you a sense of what you really want and help you get to know yourself better. If you’ve spent most of your time in a relationship, you may not realize that you’ve grown up and changed as an individual, and you may not want the same things that you did when you and your guy first got together.

Going on a break to focus on yourselves may bring you guys closer together than ever when it’s all said and done–so it may be worth considering if your relationship is getting stale or boring, but not to the point of letting go. And time apart will give you things to talk about when you’re hanging out again and keep it fresh!
