Ma’lik Richmond cried a lot at the Steubenville rape trial. On the bright side, he wasn’t the Steubenville rape victim. | Source: YouTube
By now, you’ve probably heard that the two accused rapists in the Steubenville, Ohio case, Trent Mays and Ma’lik Richmond, were found guilty. And you’ve probably also heard that Mays and Richmond, two once-promising football players and good students and popular dudes, were devastated to be found guilty of sexual assault. You may have heard that they cried in court, and about how devastating it is that their lives are dubbed “over.”
Someone call 911, because we need a wahmbulance.
You may have also heard that the two resident convicted Steubenville rapists didn’t think what they were doing was really rape because it wasn’t violent.
Hold up. Wait a minute. Let me put some knowledge in it.
Are they missing the point that not only didn’t the Steubenville rape victim not give consent, but that if she was in and out of consciousness, she couldn’t have put up much of a fight to begin with?
When witnesses said that the girl was so drunk that she didn’t know what was going on, not much physical force would have been necessary to rape her. And let’s be clear: That’s what Trent Mays and Ma’lik Richmond did. Whether or not they had to physically pin her down or use force, they still forced her into sexual acts with them because she was far too impaired to defend herself, leave or make any good judgments or decisions on her own–including the decision to consent to having sex with either or both of them.
Want to know what constitutes rape and sexual assault? Depending on the exact physical actions:
If someone asks you to do something sexually, and you say no, and they do it anyway, that’s rape or sexual assault.
If someone asks you to do something sexually and you agree, then have second thoughts and say no and they keep doing it anyway, that’s rape or sexual assault.
If someone gets sexual with you and you’re too drunk, high, asleep or otherwise too impaired to say “yes” or “no,” that’s rape or sexual assault.
This girl in Steubenville was clearly a victim.
What’s almost as infuriating is the sympathy that the Steubenville rapists are getting from the media. check out this ridiculous video from CNN, where two female reporters talk about how hard life must be when you’re a star high school football player who assaults drunk girls:
Sure, Trent Mays and Ma’lik Richmond may have a hard time getting into college and have to have their neighbors know that sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl who was too out of it to realize what was happening. But they earned that. Whether or not Trent Mays or Ma’lik Richmond meant any harm or malice, they still sexually assaulted a girl and they still bragged about it on social media. The real tragedy and heartbreak here is the rampant slut shaming and victim blaming that his case has brought out. Candy Crowley, I liked you. Why’d you have to do this?
Do you think the Steubenville rape case was indeed rape? Do you think that Trent Mays and Ma’lik Richmond got what they deserved? Do you think the media is focusing on the wrong victims of the Steubenville rape case? Tell us in the comments!

I agree with maya. It’s also interesting that one got double the time for taking a picture, but if you think about the possible effects it’s understandable. Imagine if someone took a naked picture of you, the fear of him/her spreading it online, thee shame from your family, and, even worse, if others/the media blamed you for placing yourself in a position that would allow someone to take this picture. I can’t even imagine why someone would brag about doing this.
While I feel bad for the girl in the middle of this, she had a history of drinking the way she did at that party. It was stupid of both members of the party, the girl for putting herself in a posistion that would make her unable to defend herself, and the boys for taking advantage of her state. I hope both sides have learned something out of this.
I guess it’s sad these men ruined their lives so young, but it’s disgusting how the media is sympathising with them. ‘Room full of tears’, what do think the poor girl is feeling!? She was violated and molested and will never get over it, but she’s mentioned like she was the one who did the wrong! And if she got pregnant? Making her feel guilty for pressing charges is the most horrifying thing I can think of. They obviously didn’t regret it when they took photos and videos. Oh but now they’re so sorry and they feel so guilty because they’re getting the punishment they deserve.
