GIF My Life: What You Actually Do In Driver’s Ed

As I have expressed before, learning how to drive was an experience filled with great panic for me. Taking driver’s ed did help me get a grip on most of my fears around operating a car and I learned a lot of valuable information, but it also was not the most exciting way to spend every morning in my summer.

Well, GIF Girl is itching to hit the open road, but she has to do the safe thing and finish her driver’s ed class first. It has finally come to the part of driver’s ed when she gets to drive a car, but she may learn it’s not all that it’s cracked up to be. Take a look:

So far, driver’s ed has been a lot of handouts and readings and watching videos produced many years ago.

But today is the first day I ACTUALLY GET TO DRIVE IN THE CAR.

Okay, I’ve done a little neighborhood driving with my dad, but today’s driver’s ed will be my first real non-parental driving adventure.

I’m counting down the minutes all day at school. Driver’s ed class finally rolls around, and I should be excited.

But I am actually TERRIFIED.

What if I am expected to know how to do this?!?

To relax, I remind myself why driving is so cool: you get to go cool places and see new things!

When my driver’s ed teacher says it’s time to drive, I hide all of my nervousness. I’m going to rock this.

I ask where we are heading. All the possibilities are spread out before me, unknown places just waiting to be visited!

My driver’s ed teacher wants to go to the dry cleaners. Oh well, okay. Must just be a quick pit stop before we hit the open road. I can roll with that.

Apparently I was wrong, because then the next place we go is the library so she can return some books.

Ummm, I do not feel like I am in a cool road trip movie.

Then I realize, my driver’s ed practice is just glorified errand running!

I could have been doing this with my mom all afternoon while at least getting to nap in the front seat!

I feel like I am getting a glimpse into how boring my driving adventures are actually going to be. Thanks a lot, driver’s ed.

Have you taken driver’s ed yet? What was your first learning to drive experience like? Tell us in the comments.

Ahhh my first Driver’s Ed class, I remember that well. I didn’t have to watch any videos or look at any pamphlets, I was immediately behind the wheel on my first class. I didn’t even have to go that far of a distance, I just drove in circles and practiced my turns and stops in a neighborhood. I tried to lighten the mood and be funny by telling my instructor that my only driving experience was playing Grand Theft Auto and he looked at me weird and said “0_0 ok…well…if you hit any mailboxes, at least we’re insured.”
