Super personal question time: how many people have you slept with? Or, more accurately, how many people do you think you’ve slept with? Your sex number could a whole lot higher than you thought it was.
No, you’re not having sex that you can’t remember. Let me explain. Have you ever heard anyone say that when you have sex with someone, you’re basically having sex with everyone they’ve ever had sex with? And everyone that person has had sex with? (And so on…) While that doesn’t mean that you’ve literally had sex with, like, 1,000 people, it is pretty important to think about, especially in terms of protecting yourself against STDs.
It’s pretty impossible to figure out the exact amount of people you’ve indirectly slept with. To do that, you’d have to find out exactly who your partner has been with… then you’d have to track each of those people down and find out who they’ve been with… and then find those people and… it’s just an endless cycle. That’s some pretty serious detective work and I’m definitely not advising you to get into it. First of all, you can’t just ask people who they’ve had sex with (rude) and second of all, everyone might think you’re a little crazy.
But if you’re wondering, because I think it’s pretty interesting, there actually might now be a way to find out how many people you’ve indirectly had sex with. What is it? A Sex Degrees of Separation handy-dandy calculator.
What am I talking about? As the website says, “You may have heard of Six Degrees of Separation. It’s the idea that we’re all just six connections away from everyone else on the planet. This is the inspiration for Sex Degrees of Separation.”
Oooooh. An online, free calculator that can give a clue as to how many people you’ve sort of been with your whole life? Very intriguing. Before you get too excited, though, keep in mind that this is definitely not an exact science. The calculator asks you to list how many people you’ve had sex with, along with their age and gender. It then uses data about the average sex numbers of people in those age groups and tallies things up. So really, it’s just an estimate.
But, still cool. Actually, still terrifying. The calculator is meant to show you how easy it can be to get an STD. It’s here to kind of try to scare people into using protection. And, um, guys? It works. I’ve indirectly slept with over 1,000,000 people. It’s pretty insane and is definitely a good warning to use a condom – you never know what all of those people have and chances are, a lot of them have something you don’t want.
