Weird Beauty Test Drive: Salt In Your Shampoo

Being from the South, I am quite keen on big hair. I have a crazy weave on my head, but I live in fear of flathead.

Flathead is just what it sounds like. It’s just when your hair is really flat, and it’s terrifying. My roommate and I remind each other everyday to blow dry our roots so we don’t get it.

I will do anything to avoid flathead. I’ve tried nearly every product under the sun, so beauty products don’t phase me that much. Well, my roomie decided to try LUSH Cosmetics’ Big Shampoo, which is basically salt mixed with some oils that smell really nice.

Now, I’ve used my share of salt sprays to get the beachy-wave thing. But I’ve never looked at some salt and thought “That would be really great in my shampoo.” But my roommate tried the Big shampoo, and it seemed to work.

I, being the DIY-er that I am, decided that I didn’t want to spend that much on shampoo because I have salt and shampoo already. I can just mix them, right? Well yeah, according to DailyMail, this works just as well as the LUSH shampoo.

So this weekend I figured that I should give it a go. I hadn’t washed my hair in like three days so there was a pretty good amount of product residue in my hair. Granted, the DIY instructions say to use coarse sea salt. I did not have coarse sea salt, but I did have just large regular salt so I went with that.

Instead of making a huge amount, I went with a more per-order style DIY method. While in the shower, I put my normal amount of shampoo (that’s the exact measurement) in my palm and poured an equal amount of salt so it almost had a paste-like consistency.

I rubbed the mixture together in my palms, applied it to my hair and started scrubbing. It was a little strange not having a ton of suds in my shampoo, but I went with it. I used it just like I would my regular shampoo, but focused more on my scalp instead of my ends.

I rinsed and followed up with my usual conditioner. After towel-drying, I noticed that my roots did have a little bit more of a lift. I blow dried my roots and HOLY MOLY! No flathead!

I really didn’t think it was going to work, but it definitely did. Not only did I have some big ole roots, my hair felt super duper clean. Like actually squeaky clean! Now, salt has the tendency to suck the moisture out of everything, so I don’t recommend that you use it every day.

Instead of forking over $27 for salt shampoo, grab some sea salt and shampoo you already have. Totally does the same thing!

    that is really awesome!

another hair tip: you would not realize how much residue is left over in your hair from shampoo! use the slightest bit of apple cider vinigar in a jug of warm water and pour it over your head. it leaves it SMOOTH and CLEAN! and it does not smell bad either (like vinigar)… it smells CLEAN.
