The Internet has allowed us to do a lot of weird/unnecessary things in the past few years. I’ve seen a lot of strange stuff out there that makes me scream “WTF?!?!”, but I think this latest site easily makes my top 10 list of crazy ideas – are you girls ready for this? Okay. There’s a website out there that allows guys to rent fake girlfriends. Yes. This is real life.
The website, subtly called fakeinternetgirlfriend.com, is a pricey service for dudes who want to look like they have a girlfriend without, you know, actually having a girlfriend. Once they sign up and pay, they’ll get a fake GF who will come complete with social media profiles to comment/like pictures on their Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. She’ll even call, text and leave voice mails. If you pay more money, you get other customized services, but… I don’t really want to know what that means.
Why? I was looking for the same answer and apparently, there are a lot of reasons a guy might want to pay $750 to rent a fake GF for three months, but they all come down to one thing: it’s all about keeping up appearances.
According to fakeinternetgirlfriend.com, “There are more reasons to rent an online girlfriend than you may think. Truth is, life is complicated. Sometimes have a fake internet girlfriend helps make it a lot less complicated.” Does this really make sense? Life is complicated, so, hey, why not pay a lot of money to create an elaborate lie to tell your close friends and family? That will totally make life more simple!
The site goes on to explain that looking like you’re in a relationship may help you get a job, it will “make an ex-girlfriend jealous” (VERY mature), it will help you “avoid the drama all together of the never ending questions about dating,” and it will help keep your personal life private. The site adds that your fake girlfriend will seem so real, “even you might begin to believe it.” Sounds pretty healthy.
I could go on and on for hours about how ridiculous this whole idea is. I mean, while it’s all good and dandy to look like you have a girlfriend online, what are you going to do when your friends and family start to wonder why your girlfriend is never hanging out with you? What if you’re out with them and you meet an actual real girl you want to date? Are you just supposed to be like “JK guys, don’t have a girlfriend!” Also, who pays $750 for this?! Dude, there has to be a better way to spend your money.
But what it really comes down to, for me, is this: why are some people so afraid of being single that they’re willing to do this? Is being single really horrible enough to necessitate this kind of desperation? I mean, come on, people. Being single is not that terrible! It’s not something you need to be that embarrassed about.
I mean, look, I get it: the pressure other people put on you to find a girlfriend/boyfriend can be very annoying. I was single for three years before I met my current BF. Questions from friends and family about why you haven’t met someone yet are rude. Constantly being a third or fifth wheel is very frustrating. Being set up with people you don’t want to be set up with sucks. Always having to tell people you’re single isn’t always fun. Okay. But still… being single is nothing to be ashamed of. And you should never let other people make you feel like it is.
Honestly, creating a fake girlfriend isn’t going to make being single any better. Yeah, maybe it would get people off your back for a few weeks, but like I said… what about when they start asking to meet your imaginary GF?
Being single can be pretty great if you let it be. When I was single, I had so much fun – I went out, did my thing, got super close to my girlfriends. I could do whatever I wanted whenever I wanted without having to worry about how I’m making someone else feel. I learned so much about myself and had so much time for me. Why is all of that something to be ashamed of?
Basically, if people are making you feel crappy for not being in a relationship, ignore them. Please don’t rent yourself a fake girlfriend (or boyfriend, which I’m sure will be next).
Do you think renting a fake girlfriend is ridiculous? Would you ever rent a fake boyfriend? How do you feel about being single? Tell me in the comments.
