What’s Your Favorite Color? We Bet It’s Not Pink!

If your favorite color is blue instead of pink, it doesn’t mean you’re not girly–just look at this gal’s gown! | Source: ShutterStock

When you think of a stereotypical girl’s favorite color or anything girly, the color pink is always at the forefront. But it turns out, girls don’t care much for the color pink–in fact, we like the color blue a lot better. Does that mean we’re masculine?

No. It just means, well, we like blue. (And let’s be real, most shades of blue are flattering on everyone–have you ever seen someone look bad in cobalt or navy?)

A new survey shows that blue is the top color choice among female shoppers to stock their closets, with a whopping 38 percent listing it as their favorite hue, followed by black (because everyone needs an LBD and it goes with everything) at 26 percent and red (power, and, again, looks good on everyone) at 24 percent. Up next in the rankings? Purple, then green.

As for the least favorite colors? Yellow and orange were pretty reviled, with 31 percent and 21 percent ranking them as the ones they avoid most, followed by pink at 14 percent.

But! It turns out that your hair color may have an impact on your favorite color. According to the survey, blondes preferred black and grey shades, while brunettes were most likely to pick red as their favorite color. Redheads aimed for green (no wonder, they look incredible in that color!) and brown.

One stylist put it pretty simply: automatically assuming any girl’s favorite color is always pink is old and dumb, especially because it doesn’t go with everything like other hues do. “The idea that all women should and do love pink is outdated,” she said. “Strong colors have consistently dominated the catwalks. This spring/summer season both red and black–usually associated with autumn/winter–are key shades. Blues are fantastically serviceable and black forms the basis for a sensational capsule wardrobe.”

So if you’ve ever felt like a freak for not wanting a pink prom dress or bubblegum-colored walls in your room, don’t. Your favorite color doesn’t need to be determined by gender roles. (And for the record, they used to be reversed–men used to sport pink and we rocked blue!)

Nice article, but yeah, my favorite color is still pink. It’s the color I have most in my wardrobe, follow by lavender and baby blue (I love pastels!). My hair color is naturally dark brown, but right now it’s, surprise surprise, pink!

I don’t know, I mean, I like pink. My room is covered with it, so if I can stand it I guess it means I like it. I really don’t like the color red. It’s too bright and bold. To me it looks outgoing and angry (at the same time- I don’t really know). Blue is okay, but I prefer light baby blue and sky blue to bright blue. I really do love pink- especially hot pink. Other than pink I’m not sure I have a favorite color. Maybe it’s black or grey, because I love pencil drawings.
