The Presidential Inauguration was last night, and it was pretty awesome on a few counts. Not only was it historic in the sense that President Obama was starting his second term, but it went down on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (and even one of his Bibles), right before the anniversary of Roe v. Wade–and all with Michelle Obama‘s amazing bangs.
Aside from all of the pomp and circumstance, there were also a bunch of rad, purely fun moments too. Here are a few of our favorite parts of the 2013 Presidential Inauguration!
1. President Obama talks about gay rights in his Inaugural Address!
Barack Obama was the first president in history to speak out about gay rights during an inaugural address. Like, the first ever. You can watch the full inaugural address above, but if you’re pressed for time, here’s the quote: “Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law. For if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well.” Whether or not you’re a fan of Obama in particular, you’re probably a fan of freedom and civil equality–so can we get an “amen,” a “hell yes,” a “woo?”
2. Beyonce and Kelly Clarkson are pretty much perfect, if perfection was such a thing that existed.
3. Al Roker’s mancrush on Joe Biden is the stuff of legend.
First off, most of the world has a mancrush on Joe Biden, even if they don’t agree with everything he says, because he’s sort of like everyone’s favorite uncle who maybe has one too many on Thanksgiving and loses his filter. But no one has publicly geeked out over Uncle Joe quite the way Al Roker did. The fun starts about 45 seconds in. Here’s hoping he didn’t poop his pants again.
4. Malia and Sasha Obama’s photography and dancing skills were on point.
5. So were their swearing in skills.
The “S” in “Sasha” stands for “sassy.” Can we please be best friends with these girls?
