I really miss Harry Potter sometimes. On my sad days, I’ll pop in the DVD and get pulled into the wizarding world to hang out with Harry, Ron, and most importantly, Hermione. Turns out that I’m not alone in my admiration for the girl hero of the series.
A survey of one thousand British students found that Hermione Granger was their number one movie role model – and we’re not just talking the Harry Potter movies here. Nearly 1 out of every 5 students picked Hermione for the top honor. We think that’s an A+ for Miss Granger and a trillion points to Gryffindor (like I said guys, I miss Harry Potter a lot).
So, what makes a good movie role model? I think of one as a character who I can look up to and admire, but also someone that feels relatable and that I would love to have as a friend. What’s REALLY awesome though is when a character that you love is also played by someone just as fabulous. Emma Watson and her Harry Potter character Hermione Granger are a perfect example of that two-for-one girl power goodness.
The survey got us thinking not only about what we love about Hermione, but what we love about Emma too. Here’s how we feel about these two amazing ladies:
Hermione: She's A Genius!
Right from the first moment we met her, we knew Hermione was one smart cookie. In addition to her amazing report card, it was often her quick thinking or ability to put together all the pieces that literally kept her and her friends alive. Even though her academic love meant some people poked fun at her, she never gave in and played down her smarts (also, Emma's pretty smart herself, going to Brown University and all!). Yes, we're jealous of Emma's wardrobe, but what we really admire is that she uses her fashion to express her personality. She has great confidence with everything she wears, and it feels like she's always trying to be true to herself when it comes to her looks. Not everyone would have the guts to cut their hair like her, but not only does she look fab, it's cool she went ahead and did exactly what she wanted to do with her look. Miss Granger was always there for her friends no matter what. Loyalty was one of Hermione's best qualities and she never wanted to let her friends down. Her friends brought her into some pretty crazy stuff, but she stuck by them for the whole time and proved to be a big help in overcoming obstacles they faced. Source: HuluEmma: She's Super Fun!
I love watching Emma during interviews, like a few months back when she taught Jimmy Fallon how to do a dance when visiting his show. She seems like she loves having fun and doesn't take herself too seriously. Basically despite being mega-famous, she still is just a girl who likes a good laugh. Remember that "crazy stuff" we mentioned? You know, like how she left her home behind to go off and try and defeat evil wizards (and that is just one example!)? I would have been terrified to do basically everything Hermione did, but she kept powering through and showed how not only girls, but young people in general, can be really strong. During Hurricane Sandy, Emma volunteered in NYC with Citymeals-on-Wheels. Seriously, not only do we think simply hanging out with her could brighten someone's day, but she sets a great example about giving back to your community and looking out for others. I always liked that Hermione wasn’t some kind of super smart girl who had no feelings. They dealt with some pretty heavy stuff in those books! It’s not like she was always crying or scared, but I did like that when she felt something, she wasn’t scared to express it. She knew that her emotions and feelings had value, and I often could relate to things she felt. Source: YouTubeEmma: She's Giving Us New Movie Role Models!
If you’ve seen Perks of Being A Wallflower, then you know that Emma's character Sam is a strong and interesting teen girl. We have a feeling Emma is going to keep bringing amazing girls to life on screen and creating even more role models for us movie-lovers.
