While this guy was gone, he told his best friend to look after my friend– making sure that no creepy guys were hitting on her, etc. I should mention at this point that many of my friends held a dislike for Army guy… he was kind of a toolbag and had a reputation for having short flings with more than a few girls. But my friend seemed genuinely happy with him, so we held our tongues about the relationship. A few months later, Army guy pulled a reverse Dear John on my friend without any warning– she was devastated. Luckily, a certain guy friend of Army guy was right there to take care of her, just like Army guy had requested…

Army guy’s best friend and my friend have been married for almost two years now… ;)

It’s not horrible at all! Why should you feel guilty? Your ex wasn’t treating you right and he deserved it! However what happened to your relationship with Athlete X? If you really don’t like him, it’s not a great idea to keep on using him. To make your ex jealous. But if you really do like him, then that’s something else :) .
